The Faculty of Medicine, which consists of 12 departments, is responsible for biomedical research and courses in the field of nursing and health care and has an extensive research and graduate education in more than 80 subjects.
Project description and tasks
We are currently recruiting a PhD student with a focus on medical imaging. The overall aim of the project is to develop new ultrasound imaging methods with application to medical imaging.
As a PhD student in this project, you will develop new methods for ultrasound imaging. The work will be based on 2D/3D ultrafast image sequence measurements (>1kHz frame rate), sequence design and image reconstruction, super-resolution imaging techniques and shear wave generation and imaging. As a PhD student in the project, you will perform experiments with our programmable ultrasonic scanner (Verasonics Vantage 256) with different 2D and 3D sensors.
The work takes place in an interdisciplinary research environment with other PhD students and postdocs in ultrasound, medicine, machine learning, etc. Within the doctoral studies, there will be opportunities for research stays within our network of research collaboration at laboratories in Canada, Italy and the UK.
Ultrasound can be used in many medical applications to visualize and quantify anatomical and functional aspects of tissues and organs in the body. One of the major advantages of ultrasound compared to other common medical imaging modalities (CT, MRI, PET) is that a very high image rate is possible (up to 10,000 images/sec) which makes it possible to study very fast and transient physiological processes as well as the opportunity to study very small movements and changes. Furthermore, injection of contrast bubbles can be used to create super-high-resolution images ~20um resolution. This project aims to develop new diagnostic methods by exploiting these properties with specific application towards diagnostics of vascular tissue and skeletal muscle tissue.
The project is funded by the Swedish Research Council.
Admission requirements
General admission requirements
To be admitted for doctoral studies the applicant is required to hold a University degree of at least 240 credits (ECTS), of which at least 60 credits at advanced level, or equivalent levels of education otherwise acquired in Sweden or abroad.
Specific admission requirements
Special eligibility can be either a degree in engineering physics with a profile in biomedical engineering or other university education with at least 90 credits in the subject physics, computer science, or technology, and at least 60 credits in mathematics, where a maximum of 10 credits in statistics can be included, or equivalent.
Good knowledge in English, both written and spoken, is required. The candidate is assessed for these skills during a presentation of the research plan in English for the department's doctoral education group.
Meritorious for the position is good knowledge in wave physics, programming in Matlab, experience in handling and analysis of image data, courses in anatomy and physiology, and machine learning techniques.
