The Department of Applied Physics and Electronics has approximately 110 employees. We offer undergraduate and advanced-level education in electronics and computer engineering, mechanical engineering, energy engineering, and civil engineering. Our research and doctoral education are conducted in the main areas of applied electronics, applied physics, and energy engineering. Learn more about the department here. We are currently seeking an associate professor to strengthen the department in research and teaching in the field of electronics. The application deadline is August 10, 2023.

Duties

In this position, you are expected to take responsibility for teaching existing and new courses in the Electronics Engineering program at the university. Other courses related to relevant programs within the department may also be relevant. Working towards the development of existing and new courses within the subject area is a natural part of this position. You are also expected to conduct research related to the subject area and seek external research funding. Up to 20% of the workload for undergraduate and advanced-level teaching consists of professional development time that you can use in a way that benefits research activities. After three years, you are entitled to competitively apply for up to 75% research time from the faculty. Part of the assignment also involves collaborating with the surrounding community to ensure close ties between teaching and industry developments. Advanced-level teaching is also expected to have a strong research connection.

Eligibility requirements

According to Chapter 4, Section 4 of the Higher Education Ordinance, a person shall be qualified for appointment as Senior Lecturer/Associate Professor if he or she within an area has demonstrated educational expertise and holds a doctorate or has attained equivalent academic competence or other professional skills relevant with regard to the subject area of the appointment.

To be eligible for this position, you must have documented experience of teaching and research in the subject of electronics and computer technology. Good ability to communicate in spoken and written English is a requirement.

Assessment criteria and their weight

The assessment criteria for appointment as an associate professor/senior lecturer shall be the degree of the expertise required as a qualification for employment. As much attention shall be given to the assessment of teaching expertise as to the assessment of scientific expertise.

As assessment criteria for the position, the degree of scientific and pedagogical proficiency shall be given primary and equal consideration. Secondarily, proficiency in administration, personnel and operational management, ability to collaborate with the surrounding community, and communicate research and development work shall be considered. Furthermore, other relevant skills in relation to the subject matter and the tasks included in the position shall be considered.

Scientific expertise

Scientific expertise shall be demonstrated through independent scientific productivity. The criteria for assessment are:

  • breadth and depth of research – quality and scope
  • originality of research
  • productivity
  • contributions to the international research community
  • assignments within the research community
  • the ability to competitively obtain external research funding
  • collaboration with the surrounding society

Pedagogical expertise

The pedagogical expertise for employment as associate professor should be demonstrated by documented experience of teaching with scientific foundation at university level. The criteria for evaluation are:

  • an ability to plan, implement and evaluate teaching and an ability to supervise and examine students at every level of education
  • an ability to vary teaching methods and examination formats in relation to anticipated study results and the nature of the subject
  • experience of collaboration with the surrounding society in planning and implementation of education
  • participation in the development of learning environments, teaching aids and study resources
  • a reflective approach to student learning and one’s own role as a teacher

Pedagogical expertise can be attained through education in university pedagogy, other education of relevance for teaching at a university level or documented and proven experience teaching at the university level.   

Particularly meritorious is experience in teaching analog electronics, electronic design, electronic simulation, electrical measurement systems, and control engineering. Proficiency in teaching in Swedish is advantageous as a significant portion of the teaching and interactions with the industry are conducted in Swedish. Those who do not possess the ability to teach in Swedish are expected to acquire it over time

Further qualifications

A general basis for assessment for all teaching categories is both good cooperative skills and the expertise and suitability in general required to complete the work duties satisfactorily.

Administrative proficiency can be demonstrated through experience in undergraduate program planning, skill in developing and leading others, as well as competence in managing educational matters. It is of great importance that the applicant has a strong initiative capacity and exhibits a high degree of independence.
