Marine Mesocosm Scientist 

This position will be based at Umeå Marine Sciences Centre (UMF) which is a unit within Umeå University, and is located in Norrbyn just 40 km south of Umeå. UMF’s strategic remit focuses on research, environmental monitoring and public engagement. In particular, UMF hosts a world-class mesocosm facility including both lab-based and our brand new free-floating marine mesocosms and experimental halls. Job description and working tasks

We are seeking an outstanding candidate that will have primary responsibility over the marine mesocosm systems at UMF, including research, development as well as technical aspects in the context of UMF´s inter/national research excellence (including supporting local and visiting researchers). 

UMF is a research nexus attracting international researchers to use our mesocosm platforms, thus you will perform a key function in dialogues with visiting groups to ensure the UMF platforms are tuned for answering specific environmental grand challenges. Important tasks are research dissemination and work with affiliations to key national and international networks including Aquacosm-Plus. You will also be a member of the new research grouping at UMF which develops research strategy relevant to our organisation. 

 

Qualifications

Essential criteria

  • PhD in marine/aquatic science (biology, chemistry or equivalent) 
  • Experience using and running mesocosm systems (indoor and / or outdoor free-floating) including technical aspects
  • Track record of peer-reviewed publications
  • The ability to work and plan independently 
  • Fluent in English (spoken and written) with the ability to communicate using scientific and technical terminology (e.g. with other scientists using mesocosms)

Meriting Criteria

  • Practical experience in Marine or Aquatic science and / or oceanography including laboratory work 
  • Experience in multi-consortium (e.g. EU) project-based scientific work, especially including international scientific collaboration 
  • Service-minded and team-working approach for supporting other mesocosm users and colleagues when required 

  

Terms and conditions

The position is a permanent full-time position, a probationary period may apply. Expected start date for position will be autumn 2023.
