Umeå University, Faculty of Science and Technology

Umeå University is one of Sweden’s largest higher education institutions with over 37,000 students and about 4,700 employees. The University offers a diversity of high-quality education and world-leading research in several fields. Notably, the groundbreaking discovery of the CRISPR-Cas9 gene-editing tool, which was awarded the Nobel Prize in Chemistry, was made here. At Umeå University, everything is close. Our cohesive campuses make it easy to meet, work together and exchange knowledge, which promotes a dynamic and open culture.

The ongoing societal transformation and large green investments in northern Sweden create enormous opportunities and complex challenges. For Umeå University, conducting research about – and in the middle of – a society in transition is key. We also take pride in delivering education to enable regions to expand quickly and sustainably. In fact, the future is made here.

Description

Our group uses systems biology approaches based on proteomics to characterize protein function and interactions in gut microbiome species. We are looking for a data scientist to analyze data and develop methods to complement our proteomics approaches. Apply before the deadline on May 24th  2023.

Our group is interested in studying and modulating protein function in the species of the human microbiome. We use systems biology approaches based on proteomics to understand how these species utilize nutrients or are affected by drugs.

We are looking for a research engineer to perform analyses of proteomics data, and to use computational approaches to predict protein function. You will support multiple projects from other team members, as well as develop and implement new methodologies. You will also be responsible for IT infrastructure and data management within the group.

Work tasks

Your main duties will be:

  • Analysis of mass spectrometry data, and biological interpretation of the results
  • Use computational approaches to predict protein function
  • Provide support for projects from other team members
  • Creating solutions for data visualization (e.g., developing of interactive webpages to visualize results)
  • Data management and managing of the group’s IT infrastructure.

Qualifications

It is required that you:

  • Have a Master's degree in a field related to biology or chemistry or have equivalent experience of practical work in the field
  • Have knowledge and experience with programming languages commonly used in bioinformatics (R and/or python)
  • Have experience with transcriptomics or proteomics data analysis
  • Have computational structural biology experience, such as insight into protein structures and using computational methods to predict protein structure (e.g., AlphaFold) and suggest protein function (e.g., Foldseek, DeepFRI)
  • Have experience using high performance computing clusters
  • Have experience with web development
  • Can communicate and present results in English

You are structured and stable under pressure. You enjoy working both autonomously and cooperate with other people. Furthermore, you are good at problem solving and have good verbal skills.

Special merit will be given to candidates that have experience with other programming languages.

Terms of employment

The employment is full time and a permanent employment, probational period can be used. The employment will start 2023-07-01, or as otherwise agreed.

Application

The application should include a CV, a copy of the relevant diploma and other relevant certificates/grades as well as names and contact details of at least two reference persons.

The application must be submitted via our e-recruitment system no later than May 24th 2023.
