The Department of Statistics at Umeå School of Business, Economics and Statistics (USBE), in collaboration with Center for Demographic and Ageing Research (CEDAR) is looking for a PhD student in Statistics who can perform high quality statistical research. Apply May 31, 2023, at the latest.
We are seeking a PhD student within the project “Studies of heterogeneous effects of critical life course events using machine learning” led by Anna Baranowska-Rataj (CEDAR) and Xavier de Luna (USBE/ Statistics). The general purpose of the project is to develop machine learning methods to study heterogeneous causal effects of critical life course events for processes that are relevant for population studies. The candidate will work in a multi-disciplinary research group within two environments (CEDAR and USBE).
The PhD program in Statistics is four years. PhD students may be appointed to teaching and/or consulting duties up to 20 % of their time, thereby prolonging the duration of the program to guarantee four years of graduate studies. Requirements and qualifications
Applicants should have a degree awarded at the advanced level with a major in Statistics (or equivalent qualifications). Moreover, the student must have satisfactorily undertaken courses in Mathematics equivalent to at least 30 ECTS credits. Exact prerequisites can be found at the department’s Swedish web page, or using the contact details provided below. Applicants with a degree from a non-Swedish university are strongly encouraged to provide obtained results from GMAT (and/or GRE) and TOEFL tests if available.
The assessments of the applicants are based on their qualifications and their ability to benefit from the doctoral-level education they will receive. Experience in the R programming language (or alike) is a merit for the position.

More about CEDAR
CEDAR is an interdisciplinary center where researchers from different faculties conduct high quality research on areas such as population studies, demography and ageing. There are several large databases at the center, and most researchers at CEDAR use register data, survey data or longitudinal population data in their research. CEDAR currently has 60 employees. There are approximately 30 researchers working in this environment.
CEDAR as a center has a well-established strong research environment that has over the years attracted interdisciplinary researchers and specific to this call, in the field of unemployment research. The ERC-funded project “The effects of unemployment on health of family members” (HEALFAM) led by Anna Baranowska-Rataj provides a starting point for developing ideas for the doctoral thesis.
