Umeå University, Faculty of Medicine

Umeå University is one of Sweden’s largest higher education institutions with over 37,000 students and about 4,700 employees. The University offers a diversity of high-quality education and world-leading research in several fields. Notably, the groundbreaking discovery of the CRISPR-Cas9 gene-editing tool, which was awarded the Nobel Prize in Chemistry, was made here. At Umeå University, everything is close. Our cohesive campuses make it easy to meet, work together and exchange knowledge, which promotes a dynamic and open culture.

The ongoing societal transformation and large green investments in northern Sweden create enormous opportunities and complex challenges. For Umeå University, conducting research about – and in the middle of – a society in transition is key. We also take pride in delivering education to enable regions to expand quickly and sustainably. In fact, the future is made here.

The Faculty of Medicine, which consists of 12 departments, is responsible for biomedical research and courses in the field of nursing and health care and has an extensive research and graduate education in more than 80 subjects.

The department of Public Health and Clinical Medicine, the unit of Sustainable Health, is looking for a postdoctoral researcher in quantitative ecological epidemiology.

Description of the project
The aim of project is to address key questions about the processes and mechanisms related to zoonotic and vector-borne disease transmission by developing and working with models accounting for ecological, evolutionary, or epidemiological aspects typically in relation to environmental- and climatic change to better understand relevant processes, to make predictions and guide intervention strategies. There are opportunities to customize the postdoctoral research within this context depending on interests and qualifications and the work will be conducted primarily within the Horizon Europe projects IDAlert (idalertproject.eu) and/or BEPREP (www.helsinki.fi/en/news/pandemics/how-prevent-next-pandemic) and there will also be good opportunities for interactions and collaboration with the PANDASIA project (http://pandasia-project.eu).

Work responsibilities
The postdoctoral researcher is anticipated to review the relevant scientific field and accordingly develop and/or apply modelling approaches to address key questions within the project and to disseminate results in peer-reviewed scientific journals and other outlets.

Eligibility
A person who has been awarded a doctorate or a foreign qualification deemed to be the equivalent of a doctorate in ecology, epidemiology, physics, statistics, mathematics (or in a subject of equivalent relevance to the project) is eligible for appointment as postdoctoral researcher. This eligibility requirement must be met no later than the time at which the appointment decision is made.

Good skills in programming and numerical analyses are requirements. The scientific work is conducted within the research group as well as in association with a larger collaborative scientific network, and good communication and collaborative skills are important. Good english skills are also a requirement.

Additional useful qualifications
We are primarily interested in applicants with scientific experience in mathematical or statistical process-based modelling such as deterministic or stochastic dynamical systems. Experience in machine learning or artificial-intelligence methods can also be meriting.

Previous scientific work within ecology and evolution is a useful qualification as the project will be performed in the interface between ecology, evolution and infectious disease transmission.

More information about the position
The appointment is a full-time, fixed-term position for two years in accordance with the terms of contract for fixed-term employment as a postdoctoral researcher from 1 February 2022. A one-year extension of the position may become possible.
