Umeå University, Faculty of Science and Technology

Research engineer within mass spectrometry to Swedish Metabolomics Centre

We are now recruiting a Research engineer within mass spectrometry to the Swedish metabolomic Centre. SMC supports researchers active at Swedish universities with mass spectrometry-based analysis of metabolites and lipids in biological tissues and fluids and aims to be a leading knowledge centre in metabolomics and related areas. At the metabolomics platform, specialized personnel work and the platform has mass spectrometry equipment such as GC -TOFMS, LC-QTOFMS and LC-TQMSMS. The employment is permanent full-time and probationary employment may be applied. Starting date 23-09-01 or according to agreement.

Umeå University - Faculty of Science and Technology

Umeå University is one of Sweden’s largest higher education institutions with over 37 000 students and about 4 700 employees. The University offers a diversity of high-quality education and world-leading research in several fields and the ground-breaking discovery of the CRISPR-Cas9 gene-editing tool, which was awarded the Nobel Prize in Chemistry, was made here. At Umeå University, everything is close. Our cohesive campuses make it easy to meet, work together and exchange knowledge, which promotes a dynamic and open culture.

The ongoing societal transformation and large green investments in northern Sweden create enormous opportunities and complex challenges. For Umeå University, conducting research about – and in the middle of – a society in transition is what it is all about. But also, about delivering education to enable regions to expand quickly and sustainably. This is simply where the future is built.

Umeå Plant Science Centre – Department of Plant Physiology

The Swedish Metabolomic Centre is a national facility serving Swedish researchers with metabolomic analysis (SMC; www.swedishmetabolomicscentre.se). SMC is hosted within the Umeå Plant Science Centre (UPSC www.upsc.se ) one of the strongest research environments for basic plant research in Europe and is part of the department of plant physiology. At the metabolomics platform, specialized personnel work and the platform has mass spectrometry equipment such as GC -TOFMS, LC-QTOFMS and LC-TQMSMS.

Duties

The employment includes planning and performing routine analysis of metabolites in various biological sample matrices.  The work includes sample handling, extraction of metabolites and, where applicable, solid-phase extraction (SPE) purification of samples and analysis by liquid chromatography – mass spectrometry (LC-MS) or Gas chromatography – mass spectrometry (GC -MS). The position will also include development of methods for quantitative and qualitative analysis of specific metabolites in biological sample matrices, as well as initial data analysis of metabolomics data. The work will also include participation in the development of methods, routines and maintenance of instruments as well as training and support for internal and external users of the center's resources.

Qualifications

You have a university degree in chemistry, biochemistry, or a related field at minimum master's level with a focus on analytical chemistry or equivalent. The applicant must have experience in laboratory work, experience in mass spectrometry-based analysis of small molecules and be able to work independently. Good communication skills in English are a requirement as English is the operational language at SMC.

Accuracy and structure as well as the ability to quickly implement instructions in independent work are qualities that are highly valued.

Application

The application should contain:

  1. Personal letter that describes qualifications and motivation for application (maximum one A4 page),
  2. Curriculum vitae (CV)
