Umeå University is one of Sweden’s largest higher education institutions with over 37,000 students and about 4,700 employees. The University offers a diversity of high-quality education and world-leading research in several fields. Notably, the groundbreaking discovery of the CRISPR-Cas9 gene-editing tool, which was awarded the Nobel Prize in Chemistry, was made here. At Umeå University, everything is close. Our cohesive campuses make it easy to meet, work together and exchange knowledge, which promotes a dynamic and open culture.
The ongoing societal transformation and large green investments in northern Sweden create enormous opportunities and complex challenges. For Umeå University, conducting research about – and in the middle of – a society in transition is key. We also take pride in delivering education to enable regions to expand quickly and sustainably. In fact, the future is made here.

The Faculty of Medicine, which consists of 12 departments, is responsible for biomedical research and courses in the field of nursing and health care and has an extensive research and graduate education in more than 80 subjects.
The Department for integrative medical biology announces a two-year post doc position with focused on cryo-electronmicroscopy analysis of virus proteins assembled at the lipid membrane interface and involves protein and lipid biochemistry. The employment is a fixed-term position on full-time positioned in Umeå with last day to apply 2023-01-04.
Description of the project
The project aims at mechanistic understanding of how viruses create small membrane-enclosed spaces in host cells to replicate their genome. The focus is on resolving the membrane bound structure of proteins that participate in remodelling of membranes. The successful applicant will have the opportunity to explore your research project in a scientific environment including several research groups with extensive experience in virology, biochemistry, cellbiology and imaging. For more information see https://lundmark-lab.se/, Umeå Core facility for Electron Microscopy http://www.kbc.umu.se/english/ucem/, and the Biochemical Imaging Centre at Umeå University http://www.kbc.umu.se/english/bicu/
Work responsibilities
The work includes expression and purification of proteins from E. coli and mammalian cells as well as establishment of model systems for lipid membranes and binding of proteins to these membranes. In addition, the project involves work with cells in culture as well as infection with virus models. Much of the work focuses on cryo-electron microscopy where the goal is to use single-particle analysis or tomography to resolve the structure of the membrane-bound proteins in reconstituted systems or cells.
Eligibility and qualifications
A person who has been awarded a doctorate or a foreign qualification deemed to be the equivalent of a doctorate in the subject virology is eligible for appointment as postdoctoral researcher. This eligibility requirement must be met no later than the time at which the appointment decision is made.
We are looking for an applicant with extensive practical experience of expression and purification of proteins as well as work with lipid membranes. The candidate must have practical experience with cryo-electron microscopy structural data analysis as well as documented good knowledge of both written and spoken English. It is important that the applicant can conduct independent scientific work and write scientific works.
Additional useful qualifications
Since appointment as a postdoctoral researcher is a career-development position for junior researchers, we are primarily interested in applicants who completed their doctoral degree no more than three years before the application deadline. If there are special reasons, an applicant who has completed their degree earlier than that may be considered. Special reasons include absence due to illness, parental leave, clinical practice, appointments of trust for a trade union organisation or other similar circumstances, and for relevant duties/assignments within the subject area.
It is advantageous if the applicant has a background membrane associated proteins. In the selection process emphasis will be placed on a genuine enthusiasm for the research area and methodology, personal suitability, organizational skills, and ability to work collaborative with other lab members, cryo-EM facility staff and users.
More information about the position
The employment will be on a full-time, fixed-term position for two years in accordance with the terms of contract for fixed-term employment as a postdoctoral researcher from 1 February 2022.
More information about the group's research can be obtained by contacting Prof. Richard Lundmark: richard.lundmark@umu.se or read more at https://lundmark-lab.se/ or: https://www.umu.se/forskning/grupper/richard-lundmark/
Application
The application must be submitted via our e-recruitment system Varbi no later than 2023-01-04. The application must be written in Swedish or English and must include:
