Umeå University is one of Sweden’s largest higher education institutions with over 37,000 students and about 4,700 employees. The University offers a diversity of high-quality education and world-leading research in several fields. Notably, the groundbreaking discovery of the CRISPR-Cas9 gene-editing tool, which was awarded the Nobel Prize in Chemistry, was made here. At Umeå University, everything is close. Our cohesive campuses make it easy to meet, work together and exchange knowledge, which promotes a dynamic and open culture.
The ongoing societal transformation and large green investments in northern Sweden create enormous opportunities and complex challenges. For Umeå University, conducting research about – and in the middle of – a society in transition is key. We also take pride in delivering education to enable regions to expand quickly and sustainably. In fact, the future is made here.

Umeå Plant Science Centre, UPSC, is one of Europe's strongest research environments in experimental plant biology. Here, you will have access to state-of-the-art research infrastructure and support from more than two hundred plant researchers. Our research spans from biochemistry and molecular biology to physiology and the ecosystem level (www.upsc.se).
A project assistant position as a modeler of trophic interactions in semi-artificial ecosystems is now available at the Department of Plant Physiology. The expected starting date is the 24 of January 2023 or according to agreement.
Umeå Plant Science Centre (UPSC) is one of the strongest research environments for basic plant research in Europe. Research at UPSC covers a wide range of disciplines in plant biology including ecology, computational biology, genetics, physiology, biochemistry, cell biology and molecular biology (see www.upsc.se).
During the past years, we have established and strengthened a unique consortium, which regroups expert researchers from different universities (SLU, Umeå University, Luleå Technical University, Linköping University, University of Gävle, etc), to identify the most cutting-edge strategies to develop a highly sustainable tropical food production system custom-designed for Nordic latitudes. Our concept is based on an integrated multi-trophic farming that includes several tropical species including fish, insects, crustaceans, plants, mushrooms and even flowers. The overarching idea is to optimize the nutrient loop within the biological system while increasing the circularity of the whole production by using industrial waste energies. We want to model the trophic interactions in semi-artificial ecosystems, and therefore need a project assistant acquainted with modeling and dynamics in ecosystems.
Applicants should have at least a bachelor degree in ecology, or related fields, and a documented experience in modeling interactions in ecosystems, preferentially aquatic ones.
