Umeå University, Faculty of Medicine

Umeå University is one of Sweden’s largest higher education institutions with over 37,000 students and about 4,700 employees. The University offers a diversity of high-quality education and world-leading research in several fields. Notably, the groundbreaking discovery of the CRISPR-Cas9 gene-editing tool, which was awarded the Nobel Prize in Chemistry, was made here. At Umeå University, everything is close. Our cohesive campuses make it easy to meet, work together and exchange knowledge, which promotes a dynamic and open culture.

The ongoing societal transformation and large green investments in northern Sweden create enormous opportunities and complex challenges. For Umeå University, conducting research about – and in the middle of – a society in transition is key. We also take pride in delivering education to enable regions to expand quickly and sustainably. In fact, the future is made here.

The Faculty of Medicine, which consists of 13 departments, is responsible for biomedical research and courses in the field of nursing and health care and has an extensive research and graduate education in more than 80 subjects.

The Department of Radiation Sciences is, in terms of research, a dynamic and internationally successful environment in radiology, oncology, cognitive neuroscience, radiation physics and bio-medical engineering. The department belongs to the Faculty of Medicine at Umeå University.

The Department of Radiation Sciences welcome applications for postdoctoral studies in cognitive neuroscience of aging. The position is for 2 years (with possibility to extension to maximum 3 years) full-time, starting as soon as possible upon agreement.

 Description of the project
We are announcing a full time postdoctoral position in the cognitive neuroscience of aging at the Department of Integrative Medical Biology (IMB) and Umeå center for Functional Brain Imaging (UFBI: www.ufbi.umu.se; director: Lars Nyberg). UFBI is an interdisciplinary research center where functional and structural brain imaging is used to address several basic science and clinical research questions. The research environment at UFBI is highly dynamic and stimulating, with a robust infrastructure including state-of-the-art scanning equipment and strong in-house expertise in statistics and neuroimaging analyses.

The successful candidate will work within the COBRA study that aims at studying associations between aging-related brain changes in relation to cognitive aging, with focus on the dopamine system, grey and white matter, cerebrovascular function, and activation patterns, (DOI: 10.1016/j.brainres.2014.09.010). The work is supervised by Nina Karalija and Lars Nyberg is mentor. The COBRA study is carried out in close collaboration with colleagues at the Karolinska Institute, University of Gothenburg, and the Max Planck Institute in Berlin.

Work responsibilities
The assignment consists of:
-analyzing brain imaging data from PET and MRI that has been collected at three timepoints for the same cohort (baseline, 5-year and 10-year follow-up, where the 10-year assessment is currently ongoing)
-analyzing cognitive data (episodic memory, working memory, perceptual speed) from computerized tests; and performance change over time
- perform statistical analyzes, e.g. regression analyses, group comparisons, structural equation models, to study brain-cognition associations
-writing scientific articles and presenting findings at scientific meetings

Eligibility
A person who has been awarded a doctorate or a foreign qualification deemed to be the equivalent of a doctorate in cognitive neuroscience, psychology, or medical science is eligible for appointment as postdoctoral researcher. This eligibility requirement must be met no later than the time at which the appointment decision is made.  The applicant is expected to have good knowledge in neuro- and/or cognitive neuroscience, statistics, and scientific communication in English, both orally and in writing.

Additional useful qualifications
Since appointment as a postdoctoral researcher is a career-development position for junior researchers, we are primarily interested in applicants who completed their doctoral degree no more than three years before the application deadline. If there are special reasons, an applicant who has completed their degree earlier than that may be considered. Special reasons include absence due to illness, parental leave, clinical practice, appointments of trust for a trade union organisation or other similar circumstances, and for relevant duties/assignments within the subject area.
The applicant must be able to work independently, have good analytical skills, and to be organized. Much focus will be given to the candidate’s potential collaborative skills with members of the research team and with colleagues at the department. Education within and experience of neuroscience, neurology, physiology, statistics, image analysis, and programming are not mandatory requirements but will be viewed favorably.

More information about the position
The appointment is a full-time, fixed-term position for 2 years (with possibility to extension to maximum 3 years) in accordance with the terms of contract for fixed-term employment as a postdoctoral researcher from 1 February 2022.
