Background

Umeå School of Architecture, Umeå University, is now hiring a lecturer in architecture with a focus on sustainable building technology and materials. This is a full-time, temporary position of 12 months. The start date is January 1, 2023, unless otherwise agreed. The deadline to apply is 5 December 2022. 

Umeå School of Architecture

Umeå School of Architecture, Umeå University (UMA) was established in 2009 and is now located in beautiful and expedient premises at Umeå University Arts Campus. The school has been gradually built up as an international laboratory for experimental architecture, in which both education and research are carried out. UMA currently has approximately 290 students in a five-year Architecture Programme and a Masters Programme. Around 30 teachers and researchers are currently working at the school. The Umeå Arts Campus is beautifully situated by the Umeå River; the closest neighbours are the Umeå Institute of Design, the Academy of Fine Arts, Bildmuseet and the science centre Curiosum. The Arts Campus is an international ‘hot spot’ for education and research, where students and researchers meet and collaborate in the creative field. 

Job description

The main tasks include teaching in a studio environment at bachelor's and master's level within the Architecture Programme. The main part of the teaching consists of individual supervision with students where the design process and methods for developing architectural projects are in focus. This includes everything from preparation to implementation of teaching, supervision, examination, presentations and production of teaching material. 

Qualifications 

Qualified to be appointed as a lecturer in architecture is someone who holds a Master’s degree or higher in Architecture, or other professional skills of significance to the subject area of the appointment and the duties included therein. 

We are seeking someone with documented experience of teaching, supervision and pedagogical development work at the university level in the subject area of ​​architecture with a focus on sustainable building technology and materials. 

You have a good ability to conduct education in a pedagogically thought-out way, as well as the ability to create a stimulating study environment in collaboration with students and the local community. You have the ability to independently plan, organize and enhance educational activities and to guide students, along with an ability to create collaboration within education at all levels, with practitioners and with other actors in the field of architecture and society at large.  

Experience from professional architectural practice with a focus on early stages of implementation with a focus on social, economic, and environmental sustainability in all stages is required. Knowledge of building materials and their properties from a sustainability perspective is also required. 

Very good verbal and written English communication skills is required.  

Experience of working with learning platforms is an advantage.
