The department of Statistics at Umeå School of Business, Economics and Statistics (USBE), is looking for an associate senior lecturer in Statistics and Data Science, who can perform high quality methodological statistical research. Welcome with your application at latest January 2, 2023.

Work description
The position as associate senior lecturer is a qualifying position and involves both research for scientific merit and teaching for pedagogical merit with the aim of being eligible to apply for promotion to senior lecturer. The appointment is limited to four years and consists of 70% research qualifications and 30% teaching qualifications in statistics and data science.

The person employed as an associate senior lecturer is expected to conduct high-quality independent research and contribute to the department's research environment by seeking and obtaining external research funds and developing research collaborations both within and outside the department. The work also includes teaching courses at basic and advanced level in statistics and data science, as well as planning teaching, pedagogical development work, course administration and other pedagogical qualifications such as higher education pedagogical courses.

Qualification requirements
By the employment regulations for teachers at Umeå University (dnr FS 1.1-129-22), a person who holds a doctorate in statistics/mathematical statistics/data science or has equivalent scientific competence is qualified to be employed as an associate senior lecturer. Priority should be given to candidates who has completed a doctoral degree or has reached the equivalent competence no more than five years before the application deadline for the position as associate senior lecturer has expired.

Assessment criteria and weighing between the assessment criteria
Assessment criteria include the degree of scientific and pedagogical skill in the subject of statistics and data science, experience in administrative and development work, and good cooperation skills. When weighing up the basis of assessment, the greatest importance is placed on scientific skill, and then pedagogical skill. Administrative and other skills are meritorious.

Scientific skill refer to the subject area of statistics and data science. There, development of computer-intensive methods, algorithms for machine learning, and applications on large databases (Big data) are particularly meritorious. The degree of scientific skill is primarily assessed on the basis of scientific works published in internationally distributed scientific journals that apply a so-called peer-review system. In the assessment, the department applies current quality lists from Web of Science, as well as the so-called Norwegian list. Secondly, the scientific skill is assessed based on a four-year research plan. Documented ability to obtain research funding is particularly meritorious. A stay as a postdoctoral fellow at a university other than the one issuing the doctoral degree is meritorious.

Pedagogical skills refer to the subject area of statistics and data science. Demonstrated teaching skills at undergraduate and advanced level, supervision, and documented experience of pedagogical development work are particularly meritorious. Higher education pedagogical education is meritorious.

Administrative skills are meritorious and refer partly to the ability to independently organize educational activities, as well as the ability to lead development and quality work in undergraduate education, postgraduate education and research within the subject area of the position.

Additionally, very good skills in relevant programming languages are required.

When assessing other skills, great emphasis will be placed on personal suitability. You must have good collaboration skills and be able to work focused, flexible and proactive. The applicant must also take full responsibility for their duties and be able to contribute to a good research and teaching environment. The work also requires a good ability to cooperate and collaborate with others both within and outside Umeå University and participation in the work of obtaining financial resources for research. Experience of interdisciplinary research projects and collaborations with researchers from other fields is meritorious.

The university will primarily consider those who, after an overall assessment of competence and skill, are deemed to have the best conditions to carry out and develop current tasks and contribute to a positive development of the department.

Promotion criteria
An associate senior lecturer must, on application, be promoted to senior lecturer, if he och she is eligible for employment as a senior lecturer, and is assessed as suitable for such appointment in accordance with the assessment criteria that apply for promotion to senior lecturer. Such a promotion entails indefinite employment as a senior lecturer.
