The Department of Language Studies at the Faculty of Humanities at Umeå University conducts teaching and research in language, literature and didactics in Swedish, English, Finnish, French, Italian, Linguistics, Meänkieli, Russian, Sami, Spanish, Swedish and German.

We are now seeking an Associate Professor in English Linguistics. The employment is a half time temporary position starting on January 1, 2023 until December 31, 2023

Description and work duties
The Associate Professor is primarily expected to teach English Linguistics on first-cycle courses, but also on second-cycle courses, as well as language proficiency and academic writing. Duties also include supervision of degree projects and examination of teaching placement. The range of courses includes stand-alone courses, on campus and online, as well as teacher education courses.

Administrative duties related to teaching as well as staff and planning meetings and meetings regarding the subject area are included in the position.

The employment includes skills development corresponding to 20% of full-time (for half time employment this corresponds to 10%). The skill development time is usually used for research.

Qualification requirements
To be eligible for the position, the applicant must have demonstrated teaching expertise and has been awarded a PhD in English Linguistics or has attained equivalent academic competence or other professional expertise relevant with regards to the subject area and the duties included in the position.

High proficiency in English and ability to teach in English is a requirement for the position.

Assessment criteria
Assessment criteria in the selection process are research and teaching expertise in English Linguistics, experience of online teaching, administrative activities, development work as well as good collaboration skills within research and teaching.

The research expertise must have been demonstrated by independent research contributions.
Assessment criteria include:

  • breadth and depth of research - quality and scope
  • originality of research
  • productivity
  • contributions to the international research community
  • assignments, posts and appointments within the research community
  • ability to obtain external research funding in competition
  • ability to collaborate and engage with the wider community 

The teaching expertise must have been demonstrated through documented experience of teaching on a scientific basis within higher education. 
Assessment criteria include:

  • an ability to plan, implement and evaluate teaching and an ability to supervise and assess students at all levels of education
  • an ability to vary teaching methods and examination formats in relation to intended learning outcomes and the nature of the subject
  • experience of collaboration with the wider community in planning and implementing education
  • participation in the development of learning environments, teaching aids and study resources
  • a reflective approach to student learning and one’s own role as a teacher

These skills can be obtained through teacher training for higher education, other training relevant for teaching higher education and/or documented, proven experience of teaching in higher education.

Other assessment criteria include any suitability considered to be a prerequisite for the good accomplishment of the work duties. 

Weighting of assessment criteria

Equal importance will be given to teaching and research expertise in the evaluation.

In the assessment of applicants, research and teaching expertise within the field of English Linguistics will be weighted as of special importance.

When weighting these two criteria, research expertise will be weighted higher.

Experience of online teaching will be weighted as of great importance.

Experience of administrative activities, development work, good collaboration skills within research and education as well as any suitability considered to be a prerequisite for the good accomplishment of work duties, will be weighted as of importance in the assessment.
