Umeå University, Medicinska fakulteten

Umeå University is one of Sweden’s largest higher education institutions with over 37,000 students and about 4,700 employees. The University offers a diversity of high-quality education and world-leading research in several fields. Notably, the groundbreaking discovery of the CRISPR-Cas9 gene-editing tool, which was awarded the Nobel Prize in Chemistry, was made here. At Umeå University, everything is close. Our cohesive campuses make it easy to meet, work together and exchange knowledge, which promotes a dynamic and open culture.

The ongoing societal transformation and large green investments in northern Sweden create enormous opportunities and complex challenges. For Umeå University, conducting research about – and in the middle of – a society in transition is key. We also take pride in delivering education to enable regions to expand quickly and sustainably. In fact, the future is made here.

The Faculty of Medicine, which consists of 13 departments, is responsible for biomedical research and courses in the field of nursing and health care and has an extensive research and graduate education in more than 80 subjects.

We are looking for a Senior research assistant to the Department of Molecular Biology at Umeå University. It is a temporary position for 12 months, part-time (90%). Access by agreement.

Project description and work tasks

The fruit fly, Drosophila melanogaster, has served as an excellent model to understand molecular mechanisms in the innate immune defense. In the present project, we study the signaling network that controls blood cell activation and proliferation in the Drosophila larva and the systemic response that redirects the flow of nutrients according to the demands of the immune cells.

The applicant is expected to independently plan, perform and evaluate experiments, together with the group leader and in collaboration with colleagues in Finland. The work tasks also include presenting research results at conferences, and to write publications under supervision by the group leader.

Qualifications

At the time of the recruitment, candidates must hold a university degree, equivalent to a European University PhD degree in the life sciences, at least five years of postdoctoral research experience and should have a broad expertise in Drosophila genetics, Drosophila methodology and cell biology, as well as extensive experience and documented independent research in this field. The candidate should have expertise in flow cytometry and fluorescent imaging techniques and is expected to adapt and customize these techniques for the use in the Drosophila model system. Specifically, the candidate is expected to utilize in vivo time-lapse imaging technique to follow blood cell patterning and differentiation in Drosophila larval stages. The candidate should also have documented knowledge about the cellular immune system of Drosophila and the signaling systems that control it.

Candidates must be fluent in spoken and written English and highly motivated. Because the experimental work will largely be carried out at the University of Tampere in Finland and in collaboration with researchers there, it is an advantage if the candidate is also fluent in the Finnish language.
