Scar-formation in the cornea can occur as a result of trauma, infection or certain hereditary diseases, and can lead to severe impairment of vision or even blindness. This PhD-project aims at better understanding the mechanisms underlying scar-formation, through experimental studies in different model systems of production, turnover, and organization of the collagen of the cornea, and of the importance of the collagen-producing cells (keratocytes) in scar-forming processes. Special focus is given to the role of the keratocytes as autocrine regulators of collagen metabolism.
