Umeå University, Faculty of Science and Technology

Umeå University is one of Sweden’s largest higher education institutions with over 37,000 students and about 4,700 employees. The University offers a diversity of high-quality education and world-leading research in several fields. Notably, the groundbreaking discovery of the CRISPR-Cas9 gene-editing tool, which was awarded the Nobel Prize in Chemistry, was made here. At Umeå University, everything is close. Our cohesive campuses make it easy to meet, work together and exchange knowledge, which promotes a dynamic and open culture.

The ongoing societal transformation and large green investments in northern Sweden create enormous opportunities and complex challenges. For Umeå University, conducting research about – and in the middle of – a society in transition is key. We also take pride in delivering education to enable regions to expand quickly and sustainably. In fact, the future is made here.

Umeå Plant Science Centre, UPSC, is one of Europe's strongest research environments in experimental plant biology. Here, you will have access to state-of-the-art research infrastructure and support from more than two hundred plant researchers. Our research spans from biochemistry and molecular biology to physiology and the ecosystem level (www.upsc.se).

Umeå Plant Science Centre (UPSC) is one of the strongest research environments for basic plant research in Europe. Research at UPSC covers a wide range of disciplines in plant biology including ecology, computational biology, genetics, physiology, biochemistry, cell biology and molecular biology (see www.upsc.se). A position as Senior research engineer is open at the Department of Plant Physiology, which is part of Umeå Plant Science Centre. Application deadline is April 27, 2022.

Description of work assignments

You will be a member of the Umeå Plant Science Centre (UPSC) Bioinformatics Facility, where you will provide data science service and support to the UPSC research groups. The tasks include analysis of High Throughput Sequencing (mainly RNA-seq) data – i.e., use of our pipeline for data pre-processing, quality control, results generation and presentation. Some of these projects will involve supporting researchers with bioinformatics competence to a greater extent in doing the analysis. You will assist biologists in e.g. search for sequence homologues and perform phylogenetic analyzes. It’s also included to keep up to date with the latest software and tool technologies and to develop pipelines for analysis of NGS data, similar to our RNA-Seq pipeline, e.g. for ChIP-Seq, sRNA-Seq, ncRNA-Seq or metagenomics.

Competence requirements

A doctoral degree in computational biology, bioinformatics or equivalent is a requirement. You are well acquainted with Unix / Linux and at least one programming language such as Python, R, C or C ++. It is required that you have very good knowledge in spoken and written English and have a very good ability to work independently and organize your work.

The UPSC Bioinformatics Facility is involved in cutting edge projects in plant science, hence expertise of NGS technology, especially single-cell RNA-Seq and metagenomics / metatranscriptomic is meritorious. Similarly, is the knowledge of machine learning and statistics, as well as the experience to present results graphically and interactively, such as through the use of e.g., shiny apps. It is also desirable if you have previous experience of working in multidisciplinary teams.

Application

Your application must contain a personal letter with motivation for why you are applying for the job, a CV, a copy of the relevant diploma, and other relevant certificates/grades. Applications must be submitted via our e-recruitment system no later than April 27 2022.
