The Faculty of Medicine, which consists of 12 departments, is responsible for biomedical research and courses in the field of nursing and health care and has an extensive research and graduate education in more than 80 subjects.
The Department of Integrative Medical Biology (IMB) has more than 100 employees and is part of the Faculty of Medicine. The department conducts research and teaching in the subjects of anatomy, cell biology, cognitive science, histology, pharmacology, pharmacy, physiology and other basic medical research. We are looking for a first research engineer to one of our projects with access 2022-04-01 or upon agreement. The employment is for full-time, limited to one year, and located to Umeå.
Project description
The candidate will work within the Small animal research imaging facility led by Fahad Sultan at the IMB and Umeå Comparative Center for Biology (UCCB). IMB is a multidisciplinary department with a strong focus in Neuroscience research, particularly on sensorimotor control, brain repair and imaging and cognitive functions. The actual research is based on animal models and aims at understanding how neurodegeneration (during normal aging as well as in neurodegenerative diseases such as Alzheimer’s disease and Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis) starts early on and how we can improve imaging and diagnostics in these early phases. The candidate will have a focus on use data imaging analysis techniques.
Qualifications
To be eligibility to apply you must have a Ph.D. within the field of neuroscience. We are looking for a candidate with solid knowledge in neuroscience and/or MRI techniques. An essential requirement is an experience of MRI and PET data analysis. Specifically, the applicant must have expert knowledge and experience in linux shell scripting data management (bash, C, Python), in MRI data analysis suits (FSL, SPM, ANTS), in image coregistration techniques and in handling rodent brain imaging data. Experience in functional and structural MRI data analysis (resting-state fMRI, DWI/tractography) is a further requirement for the position as well as experience in R statistical data analysis and experience with developing, deployment, security and maintenance of web applications (preferably LAMP server applications). Furthermore, general expertise of workstation OS maintenance (windows, linux) are also required.
Other qualifications
The applicant must be open to work with animal models and to animal handling. Basic knowledge in MR physics and in electronics are beneficial. The applicant should be able to work independently, to collaborate with others in a positive way and have good organizational skills. We are looking for a candidate who is flexible and driven. The applicant should have good experience in compiling results for scientific publications and you must be fluent in English both orally and in writings. Great emphasis will be placed on personal qualities.
