The Faculty of Medicine, which consists of 13 departments, is responsible for biomedical research and courses in the field of nursing and health care and has an extensive research and graduate education in more than 80 subjects.

The Department of community medicine and rehabilitation comprises six units; Occupational therapy, Physiotherapy, Geriatrics, Sports medicine, Rehabilitation medicine and Forensic medicine, all involved in teaching, research and collaboration with society and health care.

The PhD project

Our research group studies human movement behaviour, particularly following disease or injury. The present position concerns a project that addresses anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injury related to consequences and movement control of persons with injury in comparison to individuals with healthy knees. The focus is on human motion analysis using laboratory-based methodology (kinematics, kinetics and electromyographic recordings) as well as brain imaging. The project also includes various clinical assessments and questionnaires for follow-ups of treatment. Our research aims to develop clinical training and assessment methods. The project involves multi-professional collaboration with, among other fields, orthopaedics, radiology, biomedical engineering and statistics.

This PhD student position involves full-time doctoral education of four years. The successful applicant must be available to begin the position during early Spring of 2022.

The position also includes that the doctoral student undergoes the doctoral programme at Umeå University, participates in seminars and journal clubs and attends at least one scientific conference.

 

Qualifications


Certified physical therapist/physiotherapist or other university exam comprising of 240 credits of relevance to the project (such as for instance sport science, biomechanical or biomedical engineers, with a profile towards movement analysis). Applicants should have adequate knowledge of anatomy and physiology. It is desirable that the applicant has experience of clinical work in musculoskeletal diseases, preferably within training and rehabilitation of knee injuries, as is also knowledge of biomechanics and evaluation of movement control among persons with functional deficits.  Experience of advanced laboratory-based motion analysis methods such as 3D motion capture, force recordings, electromyography and analysis programs e.g., Visual 3D or similar is advantageous. Also of merit, is experience of brain imaging techniques and data processing with statistical programs, as well as scientific publication. The assessment of qualified applicants is based on the applicants’ merits and their pre-requisites to fulfil the post-graduate education.
