Umeå University, Medicinska fakulteten

Umeå University is one of Sweden’s largest higher education institutions with over 37,000 students and about 4,700 employees. The University offers a diversity of high-quality education and world-leading research in several fields. Notably, the groundbreaking discovery of the CRISPR-Cas9 gene-editing tool, which was awarded the Nobel Prize in Chemistry, was made here. At Umeå University, everything is close. Our cohesive campuses make it easy to meet, work together and exchange knowledge, which promotes a dynamic and open culture.

The ongoing societal transformation and large green investments in northern Sweden create enormous opportunities and complex challenges. For Umeå University, conducting research about – and in the middle of – a society in transition is key. We also take pride in delivering education to enable regions to expand quickly and sustainably. In fact, the future is made here.

The Faculty of Medicine, which consists of 13 departments, is responsible for biomedical research and courses in the field of nursing and health care and has an extensive research and graduate education in more than 80 subjects.

Research environment

Umeå University is the site of the pioneering discovery of the genetic scissors CRISPR-Cas9 - a revolution in genetic engineering that has been awarded the Nobel Prize in Chemistry.

The postdoctoral position is in Prof. Evander's research group, which is an interdisciplinary group with biomedical researchers, doctors and epidemiologists. The research group's focus is in translational research, studying zoonotic viral infections regarding pathogenesis, transmission routes, reservoirs, vectors and antiviral development.

Tasks

The Department of Clinical Microbiology, Umeå University, is looking for a postdoctoral fellow, for a 2-year position. The researcher will be active in a research project that intends to study infectious diseases in Rwanda from a public health perspective and characterize the prevalence related to e.g. laboratory quality, available diagnostics, zoonotic viruses and factors that may explain the prevalence.

You will be responsible for conducting research as part of Evander's research team and in close collaboration with researchers, clinics and field workers in Rwanda.

You will:

- Plan for quantitative and qualitative studies in the population and in laboratories in Rwanda.

- Identify factors that explain the prevalence of certain infectious diseases.

- Determine the prevalence of certain viral infections in the population of Rwanda.

- Participate in and contribute to scientific group meetings that involve the research group and
  the members.

- Contribute to the publication of research results.

- Participate in the education and supervision of researchers and postgraduate students.

Qualifications

Eligible to be employed as a postdoctoral fellow is a person who has completed a doctoral degree, or a foreign degree that is deemed to correspond to a doctoral degree, in public health or equivalent. This eligibility requirement must be met at the latest at the time when the employment decision is made.

A requirement for the employment is expertise in epidemiological methods, both quantitative and qualitative; expertise in the role of laboratories in health systems; experience in planning and performing collection from patients for diagnosis and analysis of infectious diseases. The scientific work requires good knowledge of the research area and the ability to work both independently and in groups under the guidance of the group leader.

You who apply must be fluent in spoken and written English and have a high motivation for research work. Since the project involves collaborations, you must be able to work productively in a group as well. Excellent communication skills are required to effectively collaborate with colleagues, including colleagues from complementary research areas. You who apply must also have the ability to independently plan experiments, develop methods, perform analyzes, and summarize results. It is expected that the postdoctoral candidate will be able to perform research experiments independently.

It is expected that the candidate will have documented good qualities in working in an interdisciplinary environment between public health, medicine and biology, and be able to collaborate with other research groups. The postdoctoral candidate will work closely with researchers, clinics and field workers in Rwanda.

Since employment as a postdoctoral fellow constitutes a merit-based employment for junior researchers, we primarily target those who have a doctoral degree that is not older than three years from the last application date. If there are special reasons, it may be considered as having completed a doctoral degree earlier. Special reasons refer to leave due to illness, parental leave, clinical service, positions of trust within trade unions or other similar circumstances, as well as service / assignments relevant to the subject area.

Knowledge of health systems in Rwanda is an advantage, as well as experience of scientific presentations at international conferences.
