Umeå University, Medicinska fakulteten

Umeå University is one of Sweden’s largest higher education institutions with over 37,000 students and about 4,700 employees. The University offers a diversity of high-quality education and world-leading research in several fields. Notably, the groundbreaking discovery of the CRISPR-Cas9 gene-editing tool, which was awarded the Nobel Prize in Chemistry, was made here. At Umeå University, everything is close. Our cohesive campuses make it easy to meet, work together and exchange knowledge, which promotes a dynamic and open culture.

The ongoing societal transformation and large green investments in northern Sweden create enormous opportunities and complex challenges. For Umeå University, conducting research about – and in the middle of – a society in transition is key. We also take pride in delivering education to enable regions to expand quickly and sustainably. In fact, the future is made here.

The Faculty of Medicine, which consists of 13 departments, is responsible for biomedical research and courses in the field of nursing and health care and has an extensive research and graduate education in more than 80 subjects.

The Department of Clinical Microbiology, Umeå University, is looking for a 1st research engineer on a permanent. The candidate will be active in a research group aiming at elucidating functional and structural determinants of viruses, and of virus interactions with host molecules.

Research Topic

Viruses such as adenovirus cause infections in e.g. eyes, airways, and/or intestine, but viruses can also be modified and utilized e.g. as vaccines against other pathogens, or used for treatment of cancer and other disorders. Thus, it is of importance to understand the structural and functional determinants of entire virions, specific viral capsid proteins, as well as virion/capsid-interactions with host molecules, to understand virus tropism as well as mechanisms of infection and pathogenesis.

We are approaching our research on virus-host interactions from different angles and propose a project, where you will study the functional and structural features of specific types of adenoviruses (potentially also other viruses) using and establishing methods to identify host cell interactions in binding, entry, transduction and infection by wild type viruses and viral vectors.

In another project, you will study interactions between virions and viral capsid proteins with host cells, host membranes and host molecules normally present on plasma membranes or present in secretions using biochemical and biophysical approaches.

We are looking for a candidate, who adds expertise to the research group in one or both of the projects above with significant experience in one or several of the following fields: biochemistry, molecular biology and molecular cloning, cell biology, and/or structural biology.

Responsibilities

You are expected to independently lead at least one research project, which involves planning, execution, interpretation of results, and draft manuscripts as well as grant applications. You are also expected to collaborate and engage in research projects lead by others, inside and outside the group. Teaching and department administration is also part of the duties.

Selection criteria

Applicants should hold a PhD in biochemistry, molecular biology, cell biology, structural biology, virology, or related areas. Ability to speak and write in English at a high level is required.

Research environment

This position is will be carried out in a highly interdisciplinary environment that involves Wallenberg Centre for Molecular Medicine (WCMM). Umeå Centre for Microbial Research (UCMR), Chemical Biological Centre (KBC), Translational Research Centre (TRC) and Molecular Infection Medicine Sweden (MIMS)
