Umeå University, Department of Radiation Sciences

Umeå University is one of Sweden’s largest higher education institutions with over 37,000 students and about 4,700 employees. The University offers a diversity of high-quality education and world-leading research in several fields. Notably, the groundbreaking discovery of the CRISPR-Cas9 gene-editing tool, which was awarded the Nobel Prize in Chemistry, was made here. At Umeå University, everything is close. Our cohesive campuses make it easy to meet, work together and exchange knowledge, which promotes a dynamic and open culture.

The ongoing societal transformation and large green investments in northern Sweden create enormous opportunities and complex challenges. For Umeå University, conducting research about – and in the middle of – a society in transition is key. We also take pride in delivering education to enable regions to expand quickly and sustainably. In fact, the future is made here.

The Department of Radiation Sciences is, in terms of research, a dynamic and internationally successful environment in diagnostic radiology, oncology, cognitive neuro-science, radiation physics and bio-medical engineering. The department belongs to the Faculty of Medicine at Umeå University.

The Department of Radiation Sciences welcome applications for postdoctoral studies in Quantitative Magnetic Resonance Imaging. The position is for two years full-time, starting April 1 2022 or by agreement.

Project description

The aim of the project is to develop and evaluate new methods for reduction and estimation of uncertainties in quantitative magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) with applications to radiotherapy.

Quantitative MRI is commonly used in the diagnosis and follow up of cancer and enables comparison of values for tissue properties both within and between patients. Furthermore, in contrast to conventional imaging which often only enables subjective interpretation of the image contrast, quantitative techniques allow interpretation of the intensity in the images. For example, one can obtain cell density from diffusion imaging and blood vessel fractions from dynamic contrast enhanced MRI. A common downside with quantitative MRI is that the obtained values often are associated with large, and often unknown uncertainties. This reduces the clinical value since small changes are hard to interpret, in particular when the uncertainty is not known.

The expected outcome of the project are methods that are practically applicable for reducing and estimating the uncertainties in quantitative MRI used in radiotherapy.

Work assignments

Your role in the project will be in both development and evaluation of new analysis methods for primarily dynamic contrast enhanced (DCE) MRI and diffusion MRI with the focus on reduced and accurately estimated uncertainties. To achieve this, you will work in a cross-disciplinary environment where you will bring knowledge in applying state-of-the-art methods in statistics and machine learning. Depending on your interests and profile, there is also the possibility to do work in image acquisition sequence development with the same aim of reduced uncertainties. You will be given the opportunity to develop independent research ideas, within the scope of the project.

Eligibility

Eligible to be employed as a postdoctoral fellow is a person who has completed a doctoral degree, or a foreign degree that is considered comparable to a doctoral degree, in medical physics, physics, statistics, computer science, mathematics or a similar subject. This eligibility requirement must be met at the latest at the time when the employment decision is made.

A very good command of written and spoken English is required. Previous experience of image processing and programming is also required.

Other qualifications required

Since employment as a postdoctoral fellow constitutes a merit-based employment for junior researchers, we primarily target those who have a doctoral degree that is not older than three years from the last application date. If there are special reasons, it may be considered as having completed a doctoral degree earlier. Special reasons refer to leave due to illness, parental leave, clinical service, positions of trust within trade unions or other similar circumstances as well as service/assignments relevant to the subject area.

Experience from working with MRI, sequence development, medical imaging, machine learning and Bayesian methods are all major merit.

We are looking for a highly motivated scientist who is quick to learn and has a demonstrated ability to work productively both independently and in a multidisciplinary team.

More about the position

The employment is a fixed-term employment full-time for two years in accordance with the term of the agreement on fixed-term employment as a postdoctoral fellow form 1 February 2022.
