Umeå universitet, Medicinska fakulteten

Umeå University is one of Sweden’s largest higher education institutions with over 37,000 students and about 4,700 employees. The University offers a diversity of high-quality education and world-leading research in several fields. Notably, the groundbreaking discovery of the CRISPR-Cas9 gene-editing tool, which was awarded the Nobel Prize in Chemistry, was made here. At Umeå University, everything is close. Our cohesive campuses make it easy to meet, work together and exchange knowledge, which promotes a dynamic and open culture.

The ongoing societal transformation and large green investments in northern Sweden create enormous opportunities and complex challenges. For Umeå University, conducting research about – and in the middle of – a society in transition is key. We also take pride in delivering education to enable regions to expand quickly and sustainably. In fact, the future is made here.

The Faculty of Medicine, which consists of 13 departments, is responsible for biomedical research and courses in the field of nursing and health care and has an extensive research and graduate education in more than 80 subjects.

Project description

The purpose of this project is to investigate the function of four-stranded G-quadruplex structures in the genome. G-quadruplex structures are formed in specific regions in the genome and are associated to cancer and neurodegenerative disorders.  These four-stranded structures not only adopt in DNA but also in RNA.

Our research group have discovered proteins that have stronger affinity to G-quadruplex structures compared to other nucleic acids structures. We aim to investigate the functions of these proteins, how they regulate G-quadruplex structures, and their association to human diseases. These investigations include a combination of cell culture experiments, molecular biology and biochemical experiments.

Eligibility

To possess basic eligibility, the applicant should hold an advanced degree, have completed studies equivalent to at least 240 higher education credits, of at least 60 credits at an advanced level.

Specific eligibility

In order to be admitted to PhD studies, the applicant must have:

1. necessary knowledge from higher education or equivalent education and / or professional experience that is assessed in relation to the postgraduate education area / subject specialization

2. necessary language skills in English, both written and oral skills. Assessment of this knowledge is done by the prospective doctoral student when presenting his / her research plan to an assessment group appointed by the head of department.

Assessment

We are looking for highly motivated applicants who have strong background in molecular biology or biochemistry.

The assessments of the applicants are based on their qualifications. In addition to the basic eligibility, the candidate must have completed theoretical education in cell or molecular biology, biochemistry or a related discipline. The applicant should also have previous practical experience in wet lab methodologies. Previous experience from the G-quadruplex field is a merit. Good knowledge in oral and written communication skills in English are required.

Application

The application must contain the following:

A personal cover letter explaining why you are interested in doctoral studies focused on G-quadruplex structures (no more than 2 A4 pages).
A curriculum vitae that documents academic education and past and previous employments.
A list with your publications.
A copy of degree certificates.

The application should be written in English. Submit your application to Varbi e-system. The deadline for application is 23rd of December 2021.

We welcome your application!

Additional information:

You who are admitted to doctoral studies from July 1st 2021 will be enrolled in the faculty-wide doctoral education programme at the Faculty of Medicine. The doctoral programme comprises 25 credits and is offered in two study variants: 25 credits spread over 8 terms (a total of 4 years) or over 12 terms (a total of 6 years), starting each autumn and spring semester. More information about the programme can be found on the faculty’s web page for doctoral studies (https://www.aurora.umu.se/en/organisation-and-management/organisation/faculties/faculty-of-medicine/doctoral-studies/).
