The Faculty of Medicine, which consists of 13 departments, is responsible for biomedical research and courses in the field of nursing and health care and has an extensive research and graduate education in more than 80 subjects.

The Department of Nursing, Umeå University, provides professional programmes in nursing in Umeå, Skellefteå and Örnsköldsvik, specialist programmes for registered nurses, masters programme in nursing and doctoral studies. Our three main subjects are Nursing, Radiography and Midwifery Science. We are now recruiting a Professor of Midwifery Science with possible combined employment as a midwife. Work tasks

Work tasks include research, development activities and teaching withing the subject area of Midwifery Science. The professor is expected to lead research and scientifically represent his or her subject area. This includes leading staff and activities. The professor is expected to attract external research grants in competition and fund the build-up and running of one’s own research group. The work tasks include teaching, supervision and examination in the subject area of midwifery science and adjacent subject areas in first and second-cycle education primarily at the Graduate Programme in Midwifery, but teaching at other programmes and educations in adjacent subject areas as well as in general skills for vocational training may be included. The professor, who must be an active researcher, must also conduct teaching on third-cycle level (doctoral education) within the field of research and development. Professors have a particular responsibility for examination on third-cycle level. To develop new courses on first, second and third-cycle levels is also included in the position. Administrative assignments and directives within the department and the Faculty of Medicine are included. Teaching at another location than the place of employment may take place and will partly be implemented using online methods remotely. Teaching takes place in Swedish and English.

The place of employment is Umeå (but work in other locations may take place)

The employment as professor can, if agreed – and under the condition that the healthcare host organisation approves – be combined with employment as a licensed midwife, which would mean clinical assignments to an extent of up to 13 hours per week within a medical region.

Eligibility requirements

Eligible professors are those who have demonstrated both research and teaching expertise.
Research expertise refers to independent research work, the ability to plan and lead research activities and the ability to impart information about research to the outside world.

Teaching expertise refers to documented experience of planning, implementation, examination and evaluation of teaching and is shown in a reflective approach to student learning and one’s own teaching role.

To be eligible for the position, the applicant must have documented ability to teach in Swedish and English. If special reasons exist, an applicant who does not have the ability to teach in Swedish may be eligible, but the applicant is expected to obtain this ability within two years of employment.

To be eligible for the position, the applicant is expected to be a recognized researcher, nationally and internationally, based on the work tasks of leading research and academically represent one’s research field. Furthermore, the applicant must demonstrate documented experience as principal supervisor in education on third-cycle level from admission until defence of doctoral thesis, based on the assignment as an examiner in third-cycle education. Additionally, documented skills in obtaining external research grants in open competition is required.

To be eligible for the position, the applicant must have documented experience of research in the field of midwifery science.

To be eligible for the position, the applicant must have documented disciplinary proficiency in the educational subject area of midwifery science.

Requirements that only apply for positions combined with the employment as a midwife:

For the position as a professor to be combined with the employment as a midwife, it is required to be a licensed midwife, and clinical skills are an eligibility requirement. Furthermore, to be eligible for a combined employment, necessary language proficiency in Swedish, Danish or Norwegian is required (according to the Swedish National Board of Health and Welfare’s definition).

Assessment criteria

Assessment criteria for employment as a professor are the level of such skills required for qualification to the position, which is research, teaching and, if applicable, clinical expertise. Additionally, the level of administrative expertise and academic leadership skills are assessed.

A general assessment criterion for teaching staff at Umeå University is both good ability to cooperate, as wells as the skills and suitability needed in general to complete the work tasks well.

Equal care must be devoted to the assessment of teaching expertise as that of research expertise.

Weighing of assessment criteria

When appointing a new professor, merits will be weighed according to the following principle: research expertise (3), teaching expertise (2). Subsequently, the degree of administrative expertise, academic leadership skills and, if relevant, clinical skills (1).

When assessing academic skills for this position, particular emphasis will be placed on scientific independence, innovative actuality, quality and originality in ongoing research in the field of sexual and reproductive health, and obtained external research grants as main applicant.

When assessing teaching skills for this position, particular consideration will be taken for documented experience of planning, implementing and evaluating educations in sexual and reproductive health on all levels of education. Experience in supervision and examination will also be taken into account. A professor is expected to demonstrate experience of doctoral student supervision as principal supervisor until defence of doctoral thesis for at least two doctoral students.

Administrative expertise can be demonstrated through experience of planning first-cycle courses and study programmes, skills in developing and leading others as well as skills in administrative assignments, for instance. 

Academic leadership skills can be demonstrated through membership and elected office within academia and research councils.

Clinical skills can be demonstrated through recent clinical experience and documented good clinical skills.
