The Faculty of Medicine, which consists of 13 departments, is responsible for biomedical research and courses in the field of nursing and health care and has an extensive research and graduate education in more than 80 subjects.

The Department of Integrative Medical Biology is searching for a Senior Lecturer in Pharmacology with the opportunity for a combined employment as a Clinical Pharmacologist. Admission to the position will be by agreement. The last date to submit an application is 7th January 2022.

Duties

As a Senior Lecturer you should be engaged in active research. Employment assignments include research and development in Pharmacology, as well as teaching and supervision of students at the doctoral level in the subject of Pharmacology. Tasks also include undergraduate teaching, supervision, and examination at basic and advanced levels. Educational responsibilities will be primarily related to Pharmacology taught within the medical, dental, and nursing programs, but may also include teaching in other programs, teaching in other related subject areas, as well as teaching in general competence that forms part of a professional medical education. Some teaching will be conducted via internet-based distance methods and in both Swedish and English.
Then position will also involve administrative tasks and assignments within the Department of Integrative Medical Biology and the Medical Faculty. As a Senior Lecturer is expected to lead their own research group, management of staff and their activities forms one aspect of the position. Management of staff and activities within teaching in the capacity of course organizer, director of studies etc. may be included.

Employment is on a full-time basis and located in Umeå.

By agreement, the position of Senior Lecturer may be combined with that of Specialist Physician/Consultant in Clinical Pharmacology within Region Västerbotten. Such an agreement must be approved by the National Public Health Authority. The framework for a Senior Lecturer working as a Specialist Physician/Consultant, involves clinical tasks comprising up to 13 hours per week.

Qualifications

To be qualified for appointment as a Senior Lecturer, the applicant should have demonstrated pedagogical competence, have completed a doctoral degree, or acquired equivalent scientific competence.

To be eligible for employment, the applicant must have a documented ability to teach in Swedish and English. Under special circumstances, those who do not have a documented ability to teach in Swedish may still be considered, but with the condition that this ability will be acquired within two years of commencing employment.

The applicant is expected to demonstrate a degree of scientific independence and be able to present an independent and up to date research program.

The applicant is also expected to have completed higher pedagogical education corresponding to 7.5 ECTS or to have otherwise acquired corresponding knowledge. If the applicant does not have this at the time of application, a pedagogical development plan must be established so that the applicant may acquire this knowledge within two years of commencing employment.

To be eligible for the position, the applicant must have documented experience of research with a pharmacological focus.

To be eligible for the position, the applicant must have documented competence and teaching experience in the subject of Pharmacology.

Requirements that only apply if the employment is to be combined with the position as a Specialist Physician:

For a combined appointment as a Specialist Physician/Consultant in Clinical Pharmacology, the applicant must have a license to practice medicine from the National Public Health Authority and a Specialist Certificate of Competence in Clinical Pharmacology, and clinical expertise constitutes an eligibility requirement. In addition, necessary language skills in Swedish, Danish, or Norwegian (according to the National Board of Health and Welfare's definition) are required.

Assessment Criteria

For employment a Senior Lecturer, skills will be assessed that are required for employment, i.e. pedagogical skills, and if applicable clinical expertise. In addition, scientific competence, administrative skills and leadership of staff and operations shall be assessed.

A general basis for assessment for teachers at Umeå University is good collaboration skills, as well as the competence and suitability that is otherwise needed to fulfill all tasks well.

Equal emphasis will be applied to assessment of pedagogical skills as to other eligibility requirements.

Weighting of the respective assessment criteria

Weighting of merits will be as follows: scientific qualification and pedagogical qualification will be weighted equally (each of weight 2), followed by weighting of merits of administrative skills, academic leadership skills, and if applicable, clinical expertise (totalling a weight of 1).

When assessing pedagogical aptitude for this position, special emphasis will be placed on documented teaching experience involving planning, implementing, and evaluating courses in Pharmacology at the undergraduate, advanced, and graduate levels. Experience of supervision and examination will also be considered.

The applicant is expected to demonstrate pedagogical activities corresponding to teaching experience of at least 50 hours.

When assessing the scientific aptitude for this position, special emphasis will be placed on independent research, creative thinking, current applicability, quality, and originality of the applicant´s ongoing research with a pharmacological focus. It is particularly meritorious to have published original work and that the applicant has played a prominent role in the generation of the relevant publications. Moreover, the successful candidate should have received external research grants as main or co-applicant in national or international competition. It is also meritorious if the applicant has undertaken a postdoc period at a university other than the one where the applicant defended their doctoral dissertation, as well as referee assignments from international scientific journals.

Administrative skills can be demonstrated, for example through experience in planning of undergraduate education, skills to develop and lead others, and skills to administer etc.

Clinical proficiency is demonstrated by current clinical experience and documented good clinical competence.
