Umeå University, the Department of Computing Science, is recruiting a research engineer to the Responsible Artificial Intelligence (RAI) group. Deadline for application is 22 th of August 2021. The Department of Computing Science is a dynamic environment with around 140 employees representing more than 20 countries worldwide. The RAI group conducts research into the effects of Artificial Intelligence on society and the promotes the responsible use of AI through the development of methods, tools and models for the responsible application of AI technologies. The group collaborates with several national and international research groups, and has active links with industry and policy organizations.

The position is full-time, for a period of 12 months. Employment start date is 1 October or otherwise agreed. The position is funded by the Wallenberg Launchpad (WALP) as part of Wallenberg AI, Autonomous Systems and Software Program (WASP).

Work Description

You will be responsible for the continued development of the web platform RAIN which visualizes, manages and tracks ethical and legal requirements for building responsible AI software. In the project is included to develop tools and integrations for automatic monitoring and evaluation of AI-software from a ethical and policy-compliance perspective. You will work closely with industry partners and domain experts within and outside the department to gather requirements and feedback on the software.
The work also includes writing (academic) reports describing the project's results as well as being part of the academic work to codify ethical requirements and policies.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in computer science or computer science or equivalent knowledge
  • Experience of full-stack development and software architecture is a requirement as the position consists of the independent development of a growing and diverse software platform
  • Experience or training in designing and implementing web development is necessary. More specifically, the research engineer should have knowledge of modern languages, libraries and frameworks, such as Node.JS, Webpack, Angular, React, Vue
  • Experience of training in the design and implementation of microservice-based server solutions and related technologies such as Docker, Python, Flask, Kubernetes
  • Experience or training in API-design and good knowledge of REST, JSON and OAuth
  • Experience of working with both relational databases and graph databases is required. Required is also knowledge on knowledge-representation, OWL, RDF and Description Logic
  • Experience or training in the design and implementation of user experience (UX) is highly desirable, so is experience of customer involvement in requirement setting and customer specific adaptation
  • Experience and knowledge of machine-learning frameworks and techniques
  • Experience with pedagogic data-visualization
  • Experience of working with assessment processes, regulations, policies and certifications are advantageous
  • Knowledge of formal philosophy, formal specification and validation as well as ethics are advantages.
