The Faculty of Medicine, which consists of 13 departments, is responsible for biomedical research and courses in the field of nursing and health care and has an extensive research and graduate education in more than 80 subjects.

The Barandun research group (www.barandunlab.org), located at the Department of Molecular Biology at Umeå University, is looking for a skilled research engineer in the role of a laboratory manager to provide research and administrative support for our ongoing work with a start date as soon as possible. The position is temporary for 12 months on full time. The last day to apply is 7 of July, 2021.

In this environment, you will have the possibility to become an essential team player and manager, shape and optimize our research processes, join ongoing research projects, learn new advanced structural biology techniques and participate in the publishing and outreach process.

Project description and tasks

Your role as a dry and wet laboratory manager will involve carrying out administrative tasks, laboratory research support and management of our structural biology computing infrastructure, to ensure our laboratory's successful day-to-day operation. You will work under supervision by the group leader.

Qualifications

Master of Science Programme in Biotechnology or similar competence, and past experience of working and managing defined projects under supervision, in a laboratory environment in a life science field are required. Hands-on experience in molecular biology and biochemistry is required. Further needed is IT competence. This includes solid technical knowledge of hardware and software (Linux), basic programming skills, experience of scientific software tools (python, R, MATLAB, Machine Vision), and the technical expertise to set up and maintain scientific software on a Unix system. Additionally, documented experience in machine learning, cloud computing, and web development is required. You need to demonstrate past experience with project management (e.g. using Agile development methods; SCRUM), purchasing/ordering, and maintaining equipment (e.g. in IT). We are looking for someone who is driven, works independently on given tasks, and also as a part of a dynamic team. The ideal candidate possesses strong problem-solving abilities, excellent communication skills in spoken and written English and Swedish, and a high level of interpersonal skills.

MIMS is the Swedish Node in the Nordic EMBL Partnership for Molecular Medicine.
