Umeå University, Medicinska fakulteten

Umeå University is one of Sweden’s largest higher education institutions with over 37,000 students and about 4,700 employees. The University offers a diversity of high-quality education and world-leading research in several fields. Notably, the groundbreaking discovery of the CRISPR-Cas9 gene-editing tool, which was awarded the Nobel Prize in Chemistry, was made here. At Umeå University, everything is close. Our cohesive campuses make it easy to meet, work together and exchange knowledge, which promotes a dynamic and open culture.

The ongoing societal transformation and large green investments in northern Sweden create enormous opportunities and complex challenges. For Umeå University, conducting research about – and in the middle of – a society in transition is key. We also take pride in delivering education to enable regions to expand quickly and sustainably. In fact, the future is made here.

We are looking for a first research engineer to the Department of clinical microbiology. Viruses cause severe diseases in the gut. The aim or this project is to identify molecules and mechanisms involved during virus infections in the gut. You will be a part of an internationally leading research group that uses state-of-the-art tools and collaborates with other leading researchers in Sweden and abroad. Our vision is to generate knowledge that can be used for development of drugs and treatments of severe infections.

We offer an international, stimulating collaboration-oriented research environment, where your scientific development is promoted. The position is limited to two years but can be transferred to a permanent position. The position starts as agreed between the parties.

The project

The aim of the project is to use different types of omics-approaches to identify, validate and characterize molecules and mechanisms involved during virus (enteric adenovirus) infection of cells, including enteric organoids (enteroids). Examples of technologies to be used: Proteomics; transcriptomics; production, purification and labeling of adenovirus; eukaryotic cell culture including human intestinal enteroids, advanced fluorescence microscopy, and qPCR for quantification of transduction/infection; and statistical analyses.

Production and purification of proteins, using prokaryotic and eukaryotic systems, and RNA-interference, CRISPR/Cas9-technique and/or pharmacological interference for validation/characterization of identified host factors.

With this position, you will lead and develop the project

  • You will plan and perform experiments, interpret results, and put these in a scientific context.
  • You will present and discuss your research with other researchers within and outside the group, on national and international meetings.
