Umeå universitet, Samhällsvetenskaplig fakultet

Umeå University is one of Sweden’s largest higher education institutions with over 37,000 students and about 4,700 employees. The University offers a diversity of high-quality education and world-leading research in several fields. Notably, the groundbreaking discovery of the CRISPR-Cas9 gene-editing tool, which was awarded the Nobel Prize in Chemistry, was made here. At Umeå University, everything is close. Our cohesive campuses make it easy to meet, work together and exchange knowledge, which promotes a dynamic and open culture.

The ongoing societal transformation and large green investments in northern Sweden create enormous opportunities and complex challenges. For Umeå University, conducting research about – and in the middle of – a society in transition is key. We also take pride in delivering education to enable regions to expand quickly and sustainably. In fact, the future is made here.

The department of Informatics offers a position as a PhD in informatics, with a focus on digital transformation.

The research
Digitization has meant revolutionary changes in several different industries. Recently, traditional industries have begun to experience disruptions associated with digitalization. While both researchers and practitioners recognize the transformative powers of digital technology, little is known about how associated changes should be implemented in practice. What we do know, however, is that firms are resource-dependent: They operate with a plethora of existing IT systems, established organizational structures, and professional roles. A challenge for larger firms in traditional industries is how the digital transformation of the organization is to be conducted, managed, and coordinated. Some Swedish firms and authorities have, for example, established new roles focusing on digitalization, responsible for coordinating digital initiatives conducted at their IT, marketing, and business development departments. However, as research in this area is still limited, we know little about which governance models and management approaches are best suited for successful digital transformation. The focus of this doctoral position is to explore how actors in traditional industries and sectors can organize themselves to generate value based on new digital innovations and manage the overall digital transformation process: How can the organization's form, structures and business processes be adapted to support and deliver both existing and new digital services?

This doctoral student position is associated to MIT graduate school where the doctoral student takes part of the courses and participates in doctoral student conferences at other universities. The employment is also associated to the research environment Swedish Center for Digital Innovation (www.scdi.se) which is located at the Department of Informatics. The research at the center is largely carried out in collaboration with partners from business, research institutes and other universities and colleges. In your studies, the doctoral student is expected to include the forest industry as one of the areas for data collection.
