Postdoctoral fellow in social work, Umeå University

The Department of Social Work at Umeå University is calling for applicants for the position of postdoctoral fellow. The position is full-time for two years.

Work responsibilities and duties

The postdoctoral fellow will mainly be expected to conduct their own research. In addition to this research, the position may include a maximum of 0.2 FTE of teaching or other departmental duties.

The successful applicant will conduct research on gender inequality in working life and family life. Previous and ongoing projects in this area study gender inequality in working life and in the interaction between working life, family life and the welfare state. A general aim has been to gain understanding of persistent inequalities while identifying trends towards change, and to study interactions between gender and other stratification such as social class and ethnicity/national origin. The research has covered themes such as skills, salary and career, flexibilisation and modern job demands, and stress and work-family conflict. These themes have been studied by means of Swedish and country-comparative studies, primarily using statistical methods but also with qualitative structures.

Eligibility requirements and assessment criteria

A person who has been awarded a doctorate or a foreign qualification deemed to be the equivalent of a doctorate is eligible for the position of postdoctoral fellow. Priority should be given to candidates who have completed their doctoral degree no more than three years before the closing date of the application. A candidate who has completed their degree prior to this may be considered if special circumstances exist. Special circumstances include absence due to illness, parental leave or clinical practice, appointments of trust in trade unions, or other similar circumstances.

Applicants must have a PhD in social work, sociology or another subject relevant to the research project. Documented experience of relevant methods is a requirement, as is fluency written and spoken English. Experience of publication in international scientific journals is a plus, as is experience of research on gender inequality/social stratification.

We are looking for a person who can independently design and conduct research, but the ability to communicate and collaborate is also important. The applicant should outline a proposal for a research project based on their area of interest and their expertise, and within the general area described above. The research can be country-comparative or cover an individual country and Nordic perspectives are welcome. Preferably, the project should be based on available quantitative data but also other designs can be considered. Depending on how interest areas and research subjects overlap, collaboration in existing projects may be possible.

Because the position of postdoctoral fellow predominately includes own research, scientific skills will weigh more heavily than teaching and educational skills in assessing the applicants’ qualifications.

Because teaching may be included in the position, documented experience of teaching at basic and advanced level and university teaching training are a plus.
