Postdoctoral fellow in social work

The Department of Social Work at Umeå university is calling for applicants for the position of postdoctoral fellow. The position is full-time for two years.

Work responsibilities and duties

The postdoctoral fellow will mainly be expected to conduct their own research. In addition to this research, the position may include a maximum of 0.2 FTE of teaching or other departmental duties.

The successful applicant will conduct research within ‘Social perspectives on school and education’, a successful research environment that currently has around 15 active researchers. This research environment is seeking a young researcher with an interest in quantitative research on issues such as educational stratification and educational system design in relation to various outcomes. The research can be based on country comparisons as well as on longitudinal analysis or time series analysis within a single country. Researchers in the environment currently work with data from PISA, HBSC, CILS4EU, EU-SILC and Swedish register data, but other data sources can also be used.

Eligibility requirements and assessment criteria

A person who has been awarded a doctorate or a foreign qualification deemed to be the equivalent of a doctorate is eligible for the position of postdoctoral fellow. The qualification must have been awarded no more than three years before the closing date of the application. A candidate who has completed their degree prior to this may be considered if special circumstances exist. Special circumstances include absence due to illness, parental leave or clinical practice, appointments of trust in trade unions, or other similar circumstances.

Applicants must have a PhD in social work or another subject relevant to the research project (e.g. sociology, educational science, political science or economics). Documented skills in quantitative research methods is a requirement, and experience of quantitative comparative analysis, longitudinal analysis or time series analysis is a plus. Experience in research on schools, educational systems or stratification is also a plus.

Because teaching may be included as part of the position, documented experience of teaching at basic and advanced level and university teaching training are a plus.

Because the position of postdoctoral fellow predominately includes own research, scientific skills will weigh more heavily than teaching and educational skills in assessing the applicants’ qualifications.
