Would you like to lead the development of research and marine management at Umeå Marine Sciences Centre (UMF)? Umeå University is now searching for a professor and director. UMF is a work unit with about 20 employees and significant infrastructure for research and environmental monitoring. UMF is situated in Norrbyn, just south of Umeå, Sweden. As a professor you will be employed by the Department of Ecology and Environmental Science. Welcome with your application no later than 7 June 2021.
The Director’s duties include the scientific and operational leadership of Umeå Marine Sciences Centre (UMF).
The successful candidate shall conduct own research within the area of marine ecosystem science and lead the development of research activities at the Centre. The director should also be qualified to supervise and examine PhD-students and to contribute to teaching at basic and advanced levels.
The task as Director is to lead and develop the Centre and its staff. This includes developing a long-term strategy for the Centre’s research and monitoring activities, its research infrastructure and staff development. The Director has managerial responsibilities for technical and administrative staff, and is expected to take a leading role in the Centre’s interactions with marine management authorities, other departments, and international partners.
The appointment as Director is for 50%, with research and research development covering another 50%. The appointment as Director is for four years. After that, the directorship can be renewed, or work duties can shift towards a larger share of research or teaching.
A person who has demonstrated both research and educational expertise shall qualify for appointment as a Professor (Chapter 4, Section 3, Higher Education Ordinance). Research expertise refers to independent research work, the ability to plan and lead research activities and the ability to impart information about research to the outside world. Educational expertise refers to documented experience of planning, implementation, examination, and evaluation of teaching and is shown in a reflective approach to student learning and one’s own teacher role.
Further, the position requires administrative skills and good knowledge of both Swedish and English in both spoken and written forms.
In the assessment criteria, primary emphasis will be put on the degree of scientific expertise. Secondary emphasis will be given to pedagogical and administrative skills with equal weight. In addition, regard will be given to other skills relevant to the area of the position and to the tasks included the employment.
Scientific expertise shall be demonstrated through independent scientific production. The criteria for assessment are:
The pedagogical expertise for employment as professor should be demonstrated by documented experience of teaching with scientific foundation at university level. The criteria for evaluation are:
Pedagogical expertise can be attained through education in university pedagogy, other education of relevance for teaching at a university level or documented and proven experience teaching at the university level.
Assessment criteria for administrative skills are:
Strategic ability and experience of development within marine and water management is merit.
Solid and documented experience of marine and water management in Sweden or other countries is a merit.
Experience and ability to communicate, convey and represent the knowledge and competence that exists within marine environmental analysis, together with a good knowledge of marine and water management in local, national, and international perspectives are merits, as well as experience and ability to collaborate with other disciplines and institutions, both nationally and internationally, and with the surrounding society.
The position is placed in Umeå with Norrbyn as the work place.
