We seek an Associate Professor in mathematical statistics for a permanent post. Applicants should strengthen our research in the area, which includes biostatistics, statistical learning, spatial statistics, and non-parametric statistics. The deadline for applications is May 31, 2021.

Background

The Department of Mathematics and Mathematical Statistics conducts research in computational mathematics, discrete mathematics, mathematical modelling and analysis, as well as mathematical statistics. Our teaching activities encompass all levels and include mathematics, mathematical statistics and computational science. We are responsible for a five-year engineering program in industrial economics. We also run, in collaboration with neighboring departments, two cross-disciplinary research environments, Icelab (www.icelab.se) and UMIT Research Lab (www.org.umu.se/umit). With this recruitment, we aim to reinforce our teaching and research in mathematical statistics.

Duties

The Associate Professor is expected to reinforce the department’s research activities in Mathematical Statistics. They are also expected to participate in our teaching activities, including teaching and pedagogical development work at both the first cycle and the second cycle, as well as supervision and examination of degree projects. Supervision of PhD students and postdocs may also be part of the position. The Associate Professor is expected to participate in departmental activities in a broad sense. Applicants who do not speak Swedish at the time of employment are expected to learn this within five years from the start of employment.

Eligibility requirements

According to Chapter 4, Section 4 of the Higher Education Ordinance, a person shall be qualified for appointment as Associate Professor if he or she within an area has demonstrated educational expertise and holds a doctorate or has attained equivalent academic competence or other professional skills relevant with regard to the subject area of the appointment.

The applicant should have a PhD degree in Mathematical Statistics or equivalent subject area relevant for the position or should have equivalent scientific competence. They should have a research profile that fits the departments research areas. Proficiency in both spoken and written English is required.

Assessment criteria and their weight

In the selection of candidates, particular emphasis will be put on the degree of scientific and pedagogical expertise, which will be given equal weight. In addition, the degree of administrative skill and other skills of importance will be considered.

Scientific expertise

Scientific expertise shall be demonstrated through independent scientific productivity. The criteria for assessment are:

  • breadth and depth of research – quality and scope
  • originality of research
  • productivity
  • contributions to the international research community
  • assignments within the research community
  • the ability to competitively obtain external research funding
  • collaboration with the surrounding society

Pedagogical expertise

The pedagogical expertise for employment as associate professor should be demonstrated by documented experience of teaching with scientific foundation at university level. The criteria for evaluation are:

  • an ability to plan, implement and evaluate teaching and an ability to supervise and examine students at every level of education
  • an ability to vary teaching methods and examination formats in relation to anticipated study results and the nature of the subject
  • experience of collaboration with the surrounding society in planning and implementation of education
  • participation in the development of learning environments, teaching aids and study resources
  • a reflective approach to student learning and one’s own role as a teacher

Pedagogical expertise can be attained through education in university pedagogy, other education of relevance for teaching at a university level or documented and proven experience teaching at the university level.

Further qualifications

It is advantageous if the applicant can teach in Swedish.

Further details

The position is full time. The starting date is from spring 2022 or upon agreement.

For the first three years, the employment comes with research and competence development time corresponding to 50 % of full time. After these three years, there is the possibility to apply in competition for up to 75 % research time from the faculty. At the department, there is also the possibility to apply for co-funding of PhD-student positions.
