Umeå University, Faculty of Science and Technology

Umeå University is one of Sweden’s largest higher education institutions with over 37,000 students and about 4,700 employees. The University offers a diversity of high-quality education and world-leading research in several fields. Notably, the groundbreaking discovery of the CRISPR-Cas9 gene-editing tool, which was awarded the Nobel Prize in Chemistry, was made here. At Umeå University, everything is close. Our cohesive campuses make it easy to meet, work together and exchange knowledge, which promotes a dynamic and open culture.

The ongoing societal transformation and large green investments in northern Sweden create enormous opportunities and complex challenges. For Umeå University, conducting research about – and in the middle of – a society in transition is key. We also take pride in delivering education to enable regions to expand quickly and sustainably. In fact, the future is made here.

Umeå University, the Department of Computing Science, is recruiting a research engineer to the Autonomous Distributed Systems (ADS) group. Deadline for application is May 25, 2021.

The Department of Computing Science is a dynamic environment with around 120 employees representing more than 20 countries worldwide. The ADS group conducts research into autonomous distributed systems and applications, including Cloud and Edge systems and applications, and back-end infrastructures such as data center systems. The group collaborates with several national and international research groups, and has active links with industry and policy organisations.

The position is full-time, for a period of 12 months. Employment start date is 1 September or otherwise agreed. The position is funded by the Wallenberg AI, Autonomous Systems and Software Program (WASP).

Work description

The research engineer will be responsible for developing an interactive online portal, including all necessary back-end tooling, to anonymise, filter, query, and extract large volumes of operations data from a live Cloud facility – the Ericsson Research Data Centre (ER DC). This data is truly “full stack” and includes metrics from hardware and facility systems to network and software workload metrics. It is expected that this project will have access to over 1 TB of explorable operations data per day.

Your primary task will be to develop the architecture and systems necessary to integrate, query and extract/transfer metric data stored in the ER DC facility (including a Timescale database, and Elasticsearch operating in a Swift container). The system is required to perform in a scalable and timely manner, considering the extremely large size of data being stored. As part of this work, you are further required to develop approaches to automatically anonymise any user identifiable data.

You will work closely with industry partners and domain experts within and outside the department to gather requirements and evaluate the platform. You will be required to travel to meet with engineers at the ER DC facility in Lund on several occasions during the life-cycle of the project.

Qualifications

·     Bachelor's degree or higher in computer science or information science or a related area.

·     Experience or training in the use of database systems; knowledge and experience in using Elasticsearch and Timescale is particularly desirable.

·     Experience or training in Cloud systems; knowledge of OpenStack (including the Swift file system) is highly desirable.

·     Experience or training in web development. The research engineer should have a good knowledge of modern languages, libraries and frameworks.

·     Experience or training in the use of Linux systems, including scripting.

·     Good team player and problem-solving skills.

Since research is conducted in an international research environment, the ability to collaborate and contribute to teamwork, and a very good command of the English language, both written and spoken, are key requirements.

Application

A complete application should contain the following documents:

·     A cover letter including your reasons to apply for the position, and your contact information

·     A curriculum vitae

·     Copies of degree certificates, including documentation of completed academic courses and obtained grades

·     Documentation of experience in Cloud and Database systems

The application should preferably be written in English or Swedish. Documents must be in Word or pdf format. Applications must be submitted electronically using the e-recruitment system of Umeå University, and be received no later than May 25, 2021. Reference number: AN 2.2.1-494.21

The recruitment aims at a balanced gender distribution, and in particular women are encouraged to apply.
