Associate Senior Lecturer position in Statistics and Data Science

The department of Statistics at Umeå School of Business, Economics and Statistics, is looking for an Associate Senior University Lecturer in Statistics and Data Science, who can perform high quality methodological statistical research.

Work description
The purpose of this tenure-track appointment is that an Associate Senior Lecturer shall be given the opportunity to develop his or her independence as a researcher and acquire research and teaching qualifications to meet the qualification requirements for appointment as a Senior Lecturer. The employment is limited in time to four years and consists of 70% research qualifications and 30% teaching qualifications in statistics and data science.

The person employed as an Associate Senior Lecturer is expected to conduct independent research of high quality and contribute to the unit research environment by applying and obtaining external research funding and developing research collaborations both within and outside the unit. The work also includes teaching at the undergraduate and advanced level in statistics and data science, as well as planning teaching, course administration and other pedagogical qualifications such as higher education pedagogical courses.

Requirements
A person who holds a doctorate in statistics/mathematical statistics/data science (or related field), or has equivalent academic competence shall be qualified for appointment as Associate Senior Lecturer. Priority should be given to candidates who have completed their doctoral degree or equivalent academic competence no more than five years before the deadline of the application as an Associate Senior Lecturer(Chapter 4, Section 4a, Higher Education Ordinance)

Assessment criteria and weighing between the assessment criteria
Assessment criteria include the degree of scientific and pedagogical skills in the subject of statistics and data science, experience of administrative and development work, and good collaboration skills. When weighing the assessment criteria, special emphasis will be placed firstly on scientific skills and secondly on pedagogical skills. Administrative and other skills are meritorious.

Scientific skills refer to the subject area statistics and data science. There, the development of computer-intensive methods, algorithms for machine learning, and applications to large databases (Big data) are particularly meritorious. The degree of scientific skill will primarily be assessed on the basis of scientific work published in internationally distributed scientific journals that apply a so-called peer-review system. Secondly, the scientific skills are assessed on the basis of a four-year research plan. Documented ability to obtain research funding is a merit.

Pedagogical skills refer to the subject area statistics and data science. Demonstrated teaching skills at the undergraduate and advanced level, supervision, and documented experience of pedagogical development work are a merit. Higher education pedagogical education is a merit.

Administrative skills are meritorious and refer partly to the ability to independently organize educational activities, as well as the ability to lead development and quality work in undergraduate education, postgraduate education and research in the subject area for the position.

In addition to this, very good skills in relevant programming languages ​​as well as very good communication skills in written and spoken English are required.

When assessing other skills, great emphasis will be placed on personal suitability. You should have good collaboration skills and be able to work focused, flexible and proactive. The applicant shall also take full responsibility for their duties and contribute to a good research and teaching environment. The work further requires a good ability to collaborate and collaborate with others both within and outside Umeå University and participation in securing financial resources for research. Experience of interdisciplinary research projects and collaborations with researchers from other fields is a merit.

The university will primarily consider those who, after an overall assessment of competence and skill, are judged to have the best conditions to carry out and develop current tasks and contribute to a positive development of the department.

Special emphasis will be on good knowledge of English, both orally and in writing, as well as the ability to teach in this language .

Review for promotion to Senior Lecturer
An Associate Senior Lecturer shall, upon application, be promoted to senior lecturer if he is eligible for a position as Senior Lecturer and deemed to meet the requirements for such employment, according to the assessment grounds to be applied for promotion to senior lecturer. Such a promotion entails a permanent employment as a senior lecturer.

The application for review for promotion must be submitted six months before the fixed-term employment ends. If an assistant university lecturer is not promoted after assessment, the fixed-term employment will be terminated.
