Umeå University, Medicinska fakulteten

Umeå University is one of Sweden’s largest higher education institutions with over 37,000 students and about 4,700 employees. The University offers a diversity of high-quality education and world-leading research in several fields. Notably, the groundbreaking discovery of the CRISPR-Cas9 gene-editing tool, which was awarded the Nobel Prize in Chemistry, was made here. At Umeå University, everything is close. Our cohesive campuses make it easy to meet, work together and exchange knowledge, which promotes a dynamic and open culture.

The ongoing societal transformation and large green investments in northern Sweden create enormous opportunities and complex challenges. For Umeå University, conducting research about – and in the middle of – a society in transition is key. We also take pride in delivering education to enable regions to expand quickly and sustainably. In fact, the future is made here.

Project description

We are looking for a senior research assistant position in cognitive neuroscience of aging for the Department of Integrative Medical Biology (IMB), Umeå center for Functional Brain Imaging (UFBI) and Wallenberg Centre for Molecular Medicine (WCMM). UFBI is an interdisciplinary research center where functional and structural brain imaging is used to address several basic science and clinical research questions. WCMM conducts research in various medical arena including cancer, infectious diseases, and nervous system diseases.

The position is in Alireza Salami’s research group and will be placed at the department of IMB. It is a fulltime position for one year and starts June 1th or upon agreement.

About work

We, as well as other research teams, have previously established that there are age-related differences in functional cross-talk between distal brains regions, measured with functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) at rest as well as structural connectivity measured by diffusion weighted imaging (DWI). However, it is unclear how relationships between the two forms of connectivity alter in aging. The initial purpose of the current project is to further investigate correspondence between structural and functional connectivity across different large-scale systems and explore how such correspondences alter in aging. The work involves analyses of existing data from the DYNAMIC project and you would potentially be involved in follow-up data collection during 2022.

Qualifications

The applicant shall have a PhD in Cognitive Neuroscience, Psychology or Biomedical Engineering. Priority will be given to applicants who graduated within five years before the application deadline and have a postdoctoral experience. We are looking for motivated candidates with hands on experience with the latest MRI techniques for studying brain connectivity and with good knowledge of cognitive neuroscience. Applicants with experience of structural brain imahing, preferably DWI, will be given priority. The applicant should be able to work independently as well as collaboratively in a research team and preferably have experience from working with statistics and scientific communication in English, both orally and in writing. Emphasis is put on the applicant’s suitability for the current project.

Application

The application must be made via Varbi e-recruitment system and must be received by April 15, the application should include:

  • A brief cover letter (about one page) that describes the applicant’s research experience, research interests, and suitability for the project.
  • CV (Curriculum vitae) including information about academic degrees (with verifications), technical expertise, employments, list of publications, and names and contact information for two references.

The position is fulltime for one year and starts June 1st or upon agreement. For more information, contact Dr. Alireza Salami, e-mail: alireza.salami@umu.se, or visit:
