The Faculty of Medicine, which consists of 13 departments, is responsible for biomedical research and courses in the field of nursing and health care and has an extensive research and graduate education in more than 80 subjects.

Postdoctoral position (two)

The department of Clinical Microbiology, Umeå University, is looking for two highly motivated postdoctoral researchers in the area of antiviral immunology with focus on respiratory virus infections. The two 2-year full-time positions will be based at the Department of Clinical Microbiology, Umeå University.

Description

You will be part of a collaboration between Associate Professors Mattias Forsell and Johan Normark. The overall focus of the project is to decipher the generation of protective immune memory against respiratory virus infections, with focus on coronavirus infections. The project is part of a larger effort to study Covid-19 and to better understand predictive factors for short- and long-term effects of the infection.

Responsibilities

The project involves methods development and implementation of state-of-the-art immunological methodology for virus-specific B- and T cell analysis of longitudinal human blood samples from covid-19-diagnosed individuals. You will be responsible for generation and analysis of single cell B- and T cells on a molecular and genetic level, and contribute with writing and publication of scientific articles.

General qualification requirements

To qualify, the applicant should have completed a PhD degree no more than three years before the end of the application period. If there are special reasons, it may be considered as having completed a doctoral degree earlier. With special reasons refer to leave due to illness, parental leave or clinical service, positions of trust in trade unions, further education or other similar circumstances.

Qualifications of particular interest

The applicant should have extensive hands-on experience working with cellular immunology and the adaptive immune system. Documented experience with multicolor flow cytometry, ELISpot and in vitro B- and T cell culture systems, is highly advantageous. Working knowledge of confocal microscopy and VDJ-sequencing of human tissue is also meritorious. The candidate must be able to carry out independent scientific research work and be able to write scientific reports and publications. Fluency in written and spoken English as well as strong computational skills is required. Emphasis will be placed on personal suitability, organizational skills, collaborative work together with technology facilities (national and international) and the clinic, as well as on genuine enthusiasm for the topic and methodology.
