The Faculty of Medicine, which consists of 12 departments, is responsible for biomedical research and courses in the field of nursing and health care and has an extensive research and graduate education in more than 80 subjects.
Postdoctoral position
The Department of Clinical Microbiology, Umeå University, wants to recruit a postdoc in Virology with focus on imaging of the brain. You will be active in a research project aimed at finding the mechanisms by which TBEV enters the brain.
Project
TBE is a neuroinvasive disease that causes encephalitis in humans, TBE is caused by a virus TBEV and the project involves using advanced microscopic methods to image infected mouse brains in 3 dimensions. Using this method you will clarify how the virus gains access to the brain and what determines the tropism.

You will be responsible for conducting research as part of Överby Wernstedt's laboratory.

Selection criteria
In the first instance, the person who may be considered should have completed a PhD degree no more than three years before the end of the application period. If there are special reasons, it may be considered as having completed a doctoral degree earlier. With special reasons refer to leave due to illness, parental leave or clinical service, positions of trust in trade unions, further education or other similar circumstances.
The successful candidate must have a doctorate in medicine or science with a focus on advanced imaging, neurology, cell biology or related disciplines.
Expertise in three-dimensional imaging of the brain is highly desirable.
Applicants must be proficient in both oral and written communication in English, be able to work independently as well as in collaboration with others and be highly motivated. You should have a large interest in virology and be willing to take on scientific and methodological challenges. Earlier practical experience of NIR-OPT, LSFM, MRI, mouse infections, FACS, tissue sections, immunohistofluorescence, immunofluorescence, mammalian cell culture, Q-PCR and imaging are highly deserving.
Ability to independently plan experiments, develop methods, perform analyzes, and summarize results in English is a requirement.
It is expected that the candidate will be able to conduct research in a very independent way.
