Umeå University, Medicinska fakulteten

Umeå University is one of Sweden’s largest higher education institutions with over 37,000 students and about 4,700 employees. The University offers a diversity of high-quality education and world-leading research in several fields. Notably, the groundbreaking discovery of the CRISPR-Cas9 gene-editing tool, which was awarded the Nobel Prize in Chemistry, was made here. At Umeå University, everything is close. Our cohesive campuses make it easy to meet, work together and exchange knowledge, which promotes a dynamic and open culture.

The ongoing societal transformation and large green investments in northern Sweden create enormous opportunities and complex challenges. For Umeå University, conducting research about – and in the middle of – a society in transition is key. We also take pride in delivering education to enable regions to expand quickly and sustainably. Postdoctoral position

The Department of Clinical Microbiology, Umeå University, wants to recruit a postdoc in Virology with focus on imaging of the brain. You will be active in a research project aimed at finding the mechanisms by which TBEV enters the brain.

Project

TBE is a neuroinvasive disease that causes encephalitis in humans, TBE is caused by a virus TBEV and the project involves using advanced microscopic methods to image infected mouse brains in 3 dimensions. Using this method you will clarify how the virus gains access to the brain and what determines the tropism.

Your role

You will be responsible for conducting research as part of Överby Wernstedt's laboratory.

You will

  • Infect mice and follow the course of infection to clarify how viruses enter the brain and what determines the viral tropism. Process mouse tissue for whole brain imaging as well as running microscopes and imaging.
  • Teach the methods to others in the lab.
  • Participate in and contribute to scientific group meetings that involve the groups and their employees
  • Contribute to the publication of research results
  • Participate in the education and supervision of researchers and postgraduate students

Selection criteria

If there are special reasons, it may be considered as having completed a doctoral degree earlier. With special reasons refer to leave due to illness, parental leave or clinical service, positions of trust in trade unions, further education or other similar circumstances.

The successful candidate must have a doctorate in medicine or science with a focus on advanced imaging, neurology, cell biology or related disciplines.

Expertise in three-dimensional imaging of the brain is highly desirable.

Applicants must be proficient in both oral and written communication in English, be able to work independently as well as in collaboration with others and be highly motivated. You should have a large interest in virology and be willing to take on scientific and methodological challenges. Earlier practical experience of NIR-OPT, LSFM, MRI, mouse infections, FACS, tissue sections, immunohistofluorescence, immunofluorescence, mammalian cell culture, Q-PCR and imaging are highly deserving.

Ability to independently plan experiments, develop methods, perform analyzes, and summarize results in English is a requirement.

It is expected that the candidate will be able to conduct research in a very independent way.
