The Department of Mathematics and Mathematical Statistics invites applications for a position as full professor in financial mathematics. The positions comes with a recruitment package that includes resources to employ one PhD student and one postdoctoral researcher, as well as discretionary research funds. Background

The Department of Mathematics and Mathematical Statistics conducts strong research and education in several complementary fields. We conduct research in Computational Mathematics, Discrete Mathematics, Mathematical Modelling and Analysis, as well as Mathematical Statistics. Our teaching activities encompass all levels and include Mathematics, Mathematical Statistics and Computational Science. We are responsible for a successful Master of Science program in Industrial Engineering and Management that year after years attracts many students. We also run, in collaboration with neighboring departments, two cross-disciplinary research environments, Icelab (https://icelab.se/) and UMIT Research Lab (https://www.umu.se/en/umit-research-lab/

With this recruitment, we aim to reinforce our teaching and research in financial mathematics.

Duties

The appointed professor shall develop and lead research in financial mathematics, preferably in collaboration with industry and/or the surrounding society. Supervision of PhD students and postdoctoral researchers is expected to be part of the employment. The professor is also expected to contribute to our educational activities in mathematics, in particular teaching and development work in financial mathematics and risk management in both the first cycle and the second cycle, including supervision and grading of diploma theses. The professor is also expected to contribute to departmental activities, broadly interpreted.

The employment comes with research time corresponding to 75 % of full time for the first three years. After these three years, it is possible to apply in competition for up to 75 % research time from the faculty. The employment also comes with resources to employ a PhD student and a postdoctoral researcher, as well as discretionary research funds that can be used any time during the first five years.

The position is full time from autumn 2021 or as otherwise agreed.

Eligibility requirements

A person who has demonstrated both research and educational expertise is qualified for appointment as a Professor (Chapter 4, Section 3, Higher Education Ordinance).

Research expertise refers to independent research work, the ability to plan and lead research activities and the ability to impart information about research to the outside world.

Educational expertise refers to documented experience of planning, implementation, examination and evaluation of teaching and is shown in a reflective approach to student learning and one’s own teacher role.

Documented research activities in financial mathematics at a high international level is a requirement.

Ability to teach mathematics at university level in English is a requirement.

Assessment criteria and their weight

When selecting applicants for the position, scientific expertise will primarily be taken into account, and given two-thirds weight. In addition, attention will be paid to pedagogical expertise. Good ability to collaborate, the ability to plan and lead research activities and the expertise and suitability in general required to complete the work duties satisfactorily will also be taken into account.

Scientific expertise

Scientific expertise shall be demonstrated through independent scientific productivity. The criteria for assessment are:

  • Breadth and depth of research –quality and extent
  • Originality in research
  • Productivity
  • Contributions to the international research community
  • Commissions of trust within the research community
  • Ability to competitively obtain research funding
  • Collaboration with the surrounding community
  • Documented experience of research activities in financial mathematics within, or in collaboration with, business, industry and surrounding society is very advantageous
  • Documented ability to attract external funding for research

In the assessment of the applicant’s publications, particular weight will be placed on scientific quality and degree of responsibility for the published work.

Pedagogical expertise

The pedagogical expertise for employment as professor should be demonstrated by documented experience of teaching with scientific foundation at university level. The criteria for evaluation are:

  • ability to plan, implement and evaluate teaching and an ability to supervise and examine students at every level of education
  • ability to vary teaching methods and examination forms in relation to anticipated study results and the nature of the subject
  • experience of collaboration with the surrounding society in planning and implementation of education
  • participation in the development of learning environments, teaching aids and study resources
  • a reflective approach to student learning and one’s own role as a teacher
  • documented ability to teach in Swedish is advantageous
  • documented experience of teaching in financial mathematics is very advantageous.

Pedagogical expertise can be attained through education in university pedagogy, other education of relevance for teaching at a university level or documented and proven experience teaching at the university level.

Further qualifications

Candidates who do not speak Swedish at the time of appointment are expected to learn Swedish within three years from the start of the appointment.
