The Department of Statistics at Umeå School of Business, Economics and Statistics, seeks applications for an open postdoc position in Statistics. The focus of this specific position is the development of inferential and clustering methods for functional data, with application to movement data. The work is partly related to the research project “Functional data analysis and applications to human movement”.

Work description
The candidate will work in a multi-disciplinary research environment, including both theoretical and applied projects. The theoretical developments of statistical methods are within the inferential framework for functional data analysis with focus on domain selection as well as clustering methods for functional data. The applied projects are related to analysis of movement data. The appointed candidate is expected to work in close collaboration with researchers from the department, from the department of Mathematics and Mathematical statistics, as well as researchers from other disciplines.

The appointment will be for two years with proposed starting date in January 2021.

Qualifications
Applicants should have a PhD in statistics/ mathematical statistics (or related area) and must have obtained their doctorate degree no more than three years before the deadline for the application.

The candidate is expected to have documented experience of

  • developing statistical methods for functional data,
  • the ability to work independently as well as part of a research group.

In addition, excellent programming skills in the software language R and excellent communication skills in written and spoken English are required.

The research activities are interdisciplinary and build on cooperation with empirical researchers. You must therefore have good interpersonal skills and be able to work in a focused, flexible and proactive manner. Experience of interdisciplinary research projects and cross-disciplinary collaboration, in particular with connection to analysis of movement data, is qualifying.
