Umeå University, Medicinska fakulteten

Umeå University is one of Sweden’s largest higher education institutions with over 37,000 students and about 4,700 employees. The University offers a diversity of high-quality education and world-leading research in several fields. Notably, the groundbreaking discovery of the CRISPR-Cas9 gene-editing tool, which was awarded the Nobel Prize in Chemistry, was made here. At Umeå University, everything is close. Our cohesive campuses make it easy to meet, work together and exchange knowledge, which promotes a dynamic and open culture.

The ongoing societal transformation and large green investments in northern Sweden create enormous opportunities and complex challenges. For Umeå University, conducting research about – and in the middle of – a society in transition is key. We also take pride in delivering education to enable regions to expand quickly and sustainably. In fact, the future is made here.

The Faculty of Medicine, which consists of 13 departments, is responsible for biomedical research and courses in the field of nursing and health care and has an extensive research and graduate education in more than 80 subjects.

The Department of Molecular Biology is seeking a postdoctoral fellow in the regulation of the molecular morphology of the olfactory sensory neuron. The employment is full-time for two years with start 2021 after agreement.

Project description and work tasks

The research addresses the consequences of evoked neuronal activity on turnover, maturation, synaptogenesis and subcellular organization of the sensory olfactory nerve cell, in its natural tissue niche. A successful candidate for the position is well acquainted with the experimental system and interested in integrative cellular physiology for which different molecular methods are used to analyze the cellular system. Please see publications from Dr. Bohm’s group for information on the line of research. The employee must also participate in certain teaching and supervision in laboratory methods, which are detailed under qualifications.

Further information is provided by Dr. Staffan Bohm, staffan.bohm@umu.se.

Qualifications

A person who has been awarded a doctorate or a foreign qualification deemed to be the equivalent of a doctorate in neuroscience (or equivalent) qualifies for employment as a postdoctoral fellow. Priority should be given to candidates who have completed their doctoral degree no more than three years before the closing date of the application. A candidate who has completed their degree prior to this may be considered if special circumstances exist. Postdoctoral fellows who are to teach or supervise must have taken relevant courses in teaching and learning in higher education.

We are looking for a highly motivated candidate with a strong background in research on olfactory sensory neurons in mammals. Crucial to employment is knowledge of molecular mechanisms that regulate the transport and expression of olfactory transduction proteins in olfactory cilia with mouse as a model. The candidate must have significant methodological experience in various experimental and bioinformatics analysis methods of mRNA and protein from tissue, i.e. translatomics and proteomics. Furthermore, the candidate must have extensive knowledge in and electro-olfactography, in situ hybridization and immunohistological analyzes with different microscopy methods including multiphoton confocal microscopy and correlative light electron microscopy (CLEM) of olfactory tissue. A completed Swedish experimental animal course as well as experience of breeding of genetically modified strains and experimental work with mice is also a requirement. Demonstrated ability to work with responsibility, creativity, ability to collaborate, good ability to communicate in English and independence in conducting research is a requirement.

Application

A complete application must include:

  • Personal letter in which you describe previous education, work and research experiences, especially in connection with the job now advertised
  • CV with publication list
  • Certified copies of doctoral degrees and other relevant diplomas, certificates, grades, etc.
  • Names and contact details of two reference persons
  • Other documents you want to invoke

The application, written in English or Swedish, is made through our electronic recruitment system. Documents sent electronically must be in Word or PDF format. Log in to the system and apply via the button at the end of this page. Last application day is 30 November 2020.
