Doctoral student in Economics

The Department of Economics at Umeå School of Business, Economics and Statistics (USBE) wishes to appoint a doctoral student in any area of Economics. We welcome your application!

Research environment
The Department of Economics has around 40 employees and teaches about 240 students per year (full time equivalents). The dominating research areas are Public Economics and Environmental Economics. Other active areas of research are Welfare Economics, Behavioural Economics, Labour Economics, Economics of Education, Health Economics and Econometrics. 

Currently, there are seven professors and five associate professors active at the department, providing young scholars with excellent opportunities for supervision and personal development. The research environment is open and friendly, and doctoral students are fully integrated into the department’s activities as staff members.

Work description
As a doctoral student, you are expected to: 

  • follow the general study plan for the doctoral programme
  • take the courses specified by your study plan
  • work on your doctoral research and
  • participate in department activities, including seminar series. 

Requirements and qualifications

  • The general requirement for admission is a degree at an advanced level, or the applicant having a total of 240 ECTS credits of which 60 credits are at the advanced level.
  • The specific requirement for admission is that the applicant has at least 90 ECTS credits in Economics.
  • The main qualifications are scientific skills, a strong interest in economic research, and the ability to work independently as well as in a team to accomplish the required tasks.
  • Applicants must be proficient in both oral and written English.
  • Applicants with a degree from a non-Swedish university are encouraged to provide their results from the GMAT (or GRE) and TOEFL tests if available
  • Documented skills in using quantitative methods such as Mathematics and Econometrics is a merit.

  • Cover letter summarizing your qualifications, scientific interests and reasons for applying (max 2 pages).
  • Curriculum Vitae.
  • Research proposal (max 2 pages) detailing your proposed doctoral research and how it fits into our research environment. The research proposal will play an important role for the selection of candidates.
  • Degree certificates.

Information
The doctoral program amounts normally to four years of full-time study. You will be employed in the department for the duration of your doctorate. This may be integrated by part-time teaching and/or administrative duties (up to 20%), which then extends the position accordingly.
