The Department of Informatics conducts research and education with a focus on the digitalisation of society, organizations and interaction. Digital technology has become an enabler for changing ways of living and doing business. In our research, we study these changes and processes of change and we study the interaction between humans and technology to understand the possibilities of technology and its limitations. In our studies of digitalisation we conduct research in many contexts such as the public sector, media, games, entertainment, finance, entrepreneurship, IT sector, manufacturing industry, and trade. As a doctoral student at the department, you become part of and are expected to contribute to our research environment. In your application, the research proposal is an important part, where you specify a research topic, give an overview of the suggested area of research and how you see that your research can make a contribution, as well as describe how your intended study should be conducted. Suggested research themes are, but are not limited to: Artificial Intelligence (AI) in the society, User experience (UX), Business intelligence and Digital transformation. The positions are not limited to these themes, you can also propose another theme that falls within the subject of informatics.
 

About the employment

You will be employed by and accepted as a doctoral student at the Department of Informatics, Umeå University. The position runs for four years full-time and means that you carry out your doctoral studies within the department's activities with a doctorate as a goal. The position may contain up to 20% of other activities (e.g. teaching). If so, the total time for the position can be extended (up to five years). Salary is paid in accordance with the established ladder for doctoral student service, and is increased in line with study progress. The call relates to full-time employment as a doctoral student. For the position, you are expected to perform your work at the department here on campus at Umeå University. Entry in September 2020 or by agreement.

 
Eligibility requirements
Applicants hold an advanced level education in informatics or related subject such as information systems, computer science, human-computer interaction or interaction design. Admission to doctoral studies requires admission to postgraduate education. Basic eligibility for postgraduate studies is a completed degree at an advanced level, or completed course requirements of at least 240 credits, of which at least 60 credits are obtained at an advanced level, or equivalent knowledge. The special qualifications required for admission to postgraduate education in informatics consist of basic university education in informatics of at least 90 credits, as well as 60 credits at advanced level in informatics (master's level) or other education of similar scope and specialization. Here, too, the requirements are also considered to be fulfilled by those who have otherwise acquired, in or outside the country, essentially equivalent knowledge. The applicant must master the English language in speech and writing and have insight into research in informatics.

In the assessment of the ability to complete the education, the following assessment criteria are applied: Analytical ability, communicative ability in writing and orally, critical ability, independence, and performance within given time frames.
