The Department of Historical, Philosophical and Religious Studies is looking for a postdoctoral researcher in History and Education. The position is located at the research environment History and Education at the Department of Historical, Philosophical and Religious Studies, Umeå University, and is financed by the Faculty of Arts and Humanities. 

The research environment History and Education is highly international and includes research and postgraduate education in both educational history and history didactics. The research environment is characterized by, among other things, frequent guest researcher exchanges and long-term research collaborations with prominent research environments. The research group runs several externally funded projects, arranges conferences and runs the peer reviewed e-journal Nordic Journal of Educational History, which is published in collaboration with other educational historical research environments in Sweden. Locally, the research group collaborates closely with Umeå Research Centre for Social Studies Didactics. 

Job description
The postdoc is expected to conduct research within history and education. The research can concern educational history or history didactics. The latter includes both history education in schools and historical culture and use of history in a wider societal context. The job tasks consist mainly of research, but include also research-related administrative tasks up to 20 % of the extent of employment. 

Qualifications and assessments
A person who has been awarded a doctorate or a foreign qualification deemed to be the equivalent of a doctorate is qualified for employment as a postdoctoral researcher. A doctoral degree in any historical or behavioral science discipline (history, history of ideas, pedagogy, educational work or other discipline relevant to the position) is a requirement for this position. A precondition for being employed is that the applicant must not previously have been employed as a postdoc at Umeå University for more than one year within the same or equivalent discipline. The degree must be completed no more than three years before the closing date of the application unless special circumstances exist. Special circumstances include absence due to illness, parental leave or clinical practice, appointments of trust in trade union organizations or similar circumstances.  

Good writing and oral communication skills in Swedish and/or English, as well as good ability to work with others, are requirements for this position.  

Research expertise is the evaluation criterion. When assessed, particular importance will be given to the applicant’s research plan attached to the application. The plan will be assessed with regard to the quality and feasibility of the proposed research, the chosen topic’s relevance to the position, and the degree of originality. Importance will also be given to research expertise demonstrated by independent research production including the PhD thesis.

(4) A concise research plan  (4–6 pages)
(5)  A list of two reference persons including their positions and contact details

Further information
The postdoc is a two year full-time position (100%) starting on September 1, 2020, unless otherwise agreed. The selected candidate is expected to contribute actively to the development of the local research environment at the Department of Historical, Philosophical and Religious Studies, Umeå University where the position is located. Therefore the selected candidate is required to be present on-site in Umeå to a high degree.
