Umeå University, Medicinska fakulteten

Umeå University is one of Sweden’s largest higher education institutions with over 37,000 students and about 4,700 employees. The University offers a diversity of high-quality education and world-leading research in several fields. Notably, the groundbreaking discovery of the CRISPR-Cas9 gene-editing tool, which was awarded the Nobel Prize in Chemistry, was made here. At Umeå University, everything is close. Our cohesive campuses make it easy to meet, work together and exchange knowledge, which promotes a dynamic and open culture.

The ongoing societal transformation and large green investments in northern Sweden create enormous opportunities and complex challenges. For Umeå University, conducting research about – and in the middle of – a society in transition is key. We also take pride in delivering education to enable regions to expand quickly and sustainably. In fact, the future is made here.

The Faculty of Medicine, which consists of 13 departments, is responsible for biomedical research and courses in the field of nursing and health care and has an extensive research and graduate education in more than 80 subjects.

Description

The research project concerns studies of structural and molecular mechanisms of the transcriptional coactivator Mediator to gain increased knowledge of how transcriptional regulation in response to various types of stress is controlled via the yeast mediator complex, S.cerevisiae.

The employment is a full time position for 12 months and is placed in the Department of Medical Biochemistry and Biophysics.

Work assignments

Use molecular biological and biochemical techniques to clone, express and purify proteins, analyze how the Mediator complex binds to chromatin in a global perspective, how this binding changes after stress and the identify other proteins and protein complexes with which the Mediator complex interacts in chromatin. Work with protein purification and different types of global methods to study gene expression and interaction of proteins with chromatin, such as RNAseq and ChIP-seq, both in terms of the laboratory steps and bioinformatic analysis.

Qualifications

PhD in Biochemistry or equivalent. Applicants should have practical experience of the work assignments described above. Applicants should also have previous experience of working with S.cerevisiae as a model organism and experience of working with transcription and transcription factors is highly meritorious.

Applicants should have experience in cloning, expression and purification of recombinant proteins in E. coli.
