Umeå School of Architecture announces a temporary position as lecturer in architecture with a focus on conceptual design processes and methods in sustainable architecture and urban design. The position is a full-time temporary position for 12 months. Starting date is August 1, 2020, or according to agreement. The final date for application is May 26, 2020.

Umeå School of Architecture

Umeå School of Architecture, Umeå University (UMA) was established in 2009 and is now located in beautiful and expedient premises at Umeå University Arts Campus. The school has been gradually built up as an international laboratory for experimental architecture, in which both education and research are carried out. UMA currently has approximately 290 students in a five-year Architecture Programme and a Masters Programme. Around 30 teachers and researchers are currently working at the school. The Umeå Arts Campus is beautifully situated by the Umeå River; the closest neighbours are the Umeå Institute of Design, the Academy of Fine Arts, Bildmuseet and the science centre Curiosum. The Arts Campus is an international ‘hot spot’ for education and research, where students and researchers meet and collaborate in the creative field.

Tasks

The main task is teaching in a studio environment at the bachelors and masters levels in the Architecture Programme. The main teaching is done through individual tutoring of students, where the design process and methods for developing architectural projects is the focus. This includes everything from the planning of to the execution of teaching, tutoring, examinations, presentations, and development of educational and teaching materials. 

Qualifications

A person is to qualify for appointment as lecturer if they hold a Master’s degree or higher in Architecture, or if they have other professional skills relevant with regards to the subject area of the appointment and the duties included therein.

You have documented experience of teaching and supervision as well as of pedagogical development work. Documented teaching and supervision in the subject area architecture at university level is a merit.

You have a good ability to conduct education in a pedagogically thought-out way, as well as the ability to create end develop a stimulating study environment in collaboration with students and the local community. You also have the ability to independently plan, organise and develop educational activities and to supervise students, create educational collaborations on all levels with practitioners and other actors in the field of architecture and in the society at large.

Experience in professional architectural practice with focus on sustainable architecture and urban design is a merit. Good knowledge in visual communication is a requirement.

You are also required to have very good verbal and written communication skills in English, as well as a good ability to collaborate and communicate. You should be independent, flexible and have the ability to take own initiatives.

Experience in working with learning platforms is a merit.
