Umeå University, Medicinska fakulteten

Umeå University is one of Sweden’s largest higher education institutions with over 37,000 students and about 4,700 employees. The University offers a diversity of high-quality education and world-leading research in several fields. Notably, the groundbreaking discovery of the CRISPR-Cas9 gene-editing tool, which was awarded the Nobel Prize in Chemistry, was made here. At Umeå University, everything is close. Our cohesive campuses make it easy to meet, work together and exchange knowledge, which promotes a dynamic and open culture.

The ongoing societal transformation and large green investments in northern Sweden create enormous opportunities and complex challenges. For Umeå University, conducting research about – and in the middle of – a society in transition is key. We also take pride in delivering education to enable regions to expand quickly and sustainably. In fact, the future is made here.

The Faculty of Medicine, which consists of 13 departments, is responsible for biomedical research and courses in the field of nursing and health care and has an extensive research and graduate education in more than 80 subjects.

The Department of Molecular Biology is looking for a Project assistant to the project "Inclusion damage and repair during infection with Chlamydia trachomatis". The position is temporary for six months on full time and expected start is in August 2020 or as agreed.

Project description and work tasks

Many intracellular pathogens of clinical importance have evolved strategies to avoid host cellular defenses by hiding within pathogen-containing vacuoles (PCVs). One of these pathogens is Chlamydia trachomatis, the most common bacterial agent of blindness and sexually-transmitted diseases. In this project, we aim to exploit the novel genetic techniques for C. trachomatis in combination with state-of-the-art live cell imaging and genetic screening technologies to obtain a comprehensive understanding of factors that regulate the stability of the Chlamydia PCV (inclusion).

This project assistant position (6 months) is a pilot study with the aim of investigating the potential of the project to be appropriate for a PhD project.

Its aims are to:

  1. Develop genetic reporter systems for the detection of inclusion damage in infected cells.
  2. Apply the novel tools for a quantitative and temporal analysis of inclusion damage during infection.

The selected candidate will under supervision of the group leader use molecular genetic techniques, human cell culture, and fluorescence microscopy to study infections, and will document and present the findings.

Qualifications

You should have qualifications equivalent to a European University Master degree in molecular biology (or equivalent fields) at the time of the recruitment. You should have profound theoretical knowledge in molecular biology and cell biology and you should have documented practical experience in molecular biology. You should have previous practical experience in working with bacterial pathogens and live cell imaging applications and previous exposure to methodology common to the field of biophysics given the multidisciplinary nature of the approach.

You should be passionate about science, willing to take on scientific and technical challenges, and able to work productively in a team. Excellent communication skills for interacting effectively with senior colleagues and peers are required. You must have very good ability in spoken and written English. Great emphasis will be placed on personal suitability.
