Umeå University is one of Sweden’s largest higher education institutions with over 37,000 students and about 4,700 employees. The University offers a diversity of high-quality education and world-leading research in several fields. Notably, the groundbreaking discovery of the CRISPR-Cas9 gene-editing tool, which was awarded the Nobel Prize in Chemistry, was made here. At Umeå University, everything is close. Our cohesive campuses make it easy to meet, work together and exchange knowledge, which promotes a dynamic and open culture.
The ongoing societal transformation and large green investments in northern Sweden create enormous opportunities and complex challenges. For Umeå University, conducting research about – and in the middle of – a society in transition is key. We also take pride in delivering education to enable regions to expand quickly and sustainably. In fact, the future is made here.

The Faculty of Medicine, which consists of 12 departments, is responsible for biomedical research and courses in the field of nursing and health care and has an extensive research and graduate education in more than 80 subjects.
The Department of Integrative Medical Biology is looking for a post doctor, full time, for 2 years.
Flaviviruses such as dengue virus, yellow fever virus, Zika virus and tick-borne encephalitis virus (TBEV) cause severe disease in humans. Flaviviruses replicate their RNA genome in infected cells by generating small cavities in cellular membranes, called replication compartments (RCs). The RCs are formed in response to the expression of viral proteins and this process is absolutely essential for the propagation and transmission of viruses.
This project aims at applying cryo-electron microscopy and correlative imaging techniques to resolve the structural composition of replication compartments formed by TBEV in cells. Special focus is given to focused ion-beam (FIB) technology and cryo-electron tomography in combination with light microscopy with the aim to precisely map the supramolecular arrangement of viral proteins in RC´s inside cells.
We use specially designed non-infectious cell-model systems. The gained mechanistic understanding of how RCs are formed will be instrumental to the combat of flavivirus infections.
The successful applicant will have the opportunity to explore your research project in a scientific environment including several research groups with extensive experience in virology, biochemistry, cell biology and imaging. Both the Umeå Core facility for Electron Microscopy (http://www.kbc.umu.se/english/ucem/), and the Biochemical Imaging Centre at Umeå University (http://www.kbc.umu.se/english/bicu/) as well as other UmU facilities will be accessible as part of this project.

The candidates should have a PhD degree, or be about to receive a PhD in the relevant area. Priority will be given to applicants that have defended their PhD thesis within the last three years.
Qualified applicants should have a documented experience in one, or several, fields related to the project such as; molecular biology, cell biology, structural biology, light microscopy, electron microscopy, 3D visualization and image processing.
Strong computational skills, as well as good knowledge of cell biology, are considered as additional merits. Candidates must be able to carry out independent scientific research work and to write scientific reports and manuscripts. Fluency in written and spoken English is essential.
In the selection process emphasis will also be placed on a genuine enthusiasm for the research area and methodology, personal suitability, organizational skills, and ability to work collaborative with other lab members, cryo-EM facility staff and users.
