The Department of Geography at Umeå University has about 40 employees. Within the discipline of Geography, our focus is on education and research in Human Geography, ie. on the social sciences part of the discipline. Human Geography is also linked to natural geographic and ecological conditions that affect human activities and societal development. The department hosts the Geography Teacher Education at Umeå University.

The doctoral position has a focus on teaching and learning, which means that the doctoral student should work with research in the main area of ​​Human Geography, but with a specific emphasis on teaching and learning in organized forms. Themes could be linked, for example, to sustainable development or GIS (Geographic Information Systems). This PhD position is a collaboration with the Umeå School of Education (https://www.umu.se/lararhogskolan/) and is part of The Postgraduate School in the Educational Sciences (https://www.umu.se/en/umea-school-of-education/education/the-postgraduate-school-in-the-educational-sciences/).

Qualifications
Qualified to apply are persons who have basic entry requirements i.e. who have completed a degree at an advanced level, completed course requirements of at least 240 credits, of which at least 60 credits at advanced level, and at least 90 credits in Human Geography or equivalent knowledge acquired within or outside the country.

The applicant should master English in speech and writing and have insight into research in the social sciences field. Merit is also documented knowledge of and experience in teaching and learning in the field of Geography.

Terms of employment
Doctoral students will primarily devote themselves to their education at post-graduate level. Employment as a doctoral student is for the time necessary for the completion of research studies at a normal rate of study, which corresponds to a full-time position for four years. The initial contract of 12 months may be extended by up to a maximum of two years at a time, providing that the doctoral student’s individual study plan has been followed. Doctoral students may work with teaching and administration up to a maximum of 20 percent of their full-time employment. In such cases, the period of employment is extended with the equivalent time spend on teaching/administration, up to a maximum of one additional year.

Doctoral students are affiliated with the Postgraduate school in the educational sciences, coordinated with the PhD programme at the Department of Geography. Doctoral studies begin at the start of the autumn semester, 31 August 2020. The place of work is Umeå University. Salary level is according to the established salary ladder for doctoral students. Doctoral students are expected to actively contribute to the research environment.

The doctoral student will be working at the Department of Geography and the Department is responsible for the subject-specific research training and supervision. According to The Higher Education Ordinance (Chapter 12 §2), a decision of appointment to a doctoral position cannot be appealed.
