Work description

The work tasks mainly includes research and teaching. The holder of this position is expected to independently conduct research in Inorganic Geochemistry. Teaching can take place at both the undergraduate and advanced levels and the doctoral level, and mainly in inorganic chemistry. Teaching in other parts of the subject Chemistry may also occur. Teaching assignments can also include course development, supervision and examination as well as administrative tasks such as being course coordinator. In addition, supervision at postgraduate and postdoctoral level may be included. Furthermore, administrative tasks and assignments can be included within the Department of Chemistry and the Faculty of Science and Technology. Management of staff and operations is included as the associate professor is expected to lead an own research group. The position is an employment as a substitute during the period March 1st to June 30th.

Requirements

According to Chapter 4, Section 4 of the Higher Education Ordinance:

A person shall qualify for appointment as Associate Professor if he or she has demonstrated educational expertise and holds a doctorate or has attained equivalent academic competence or other professional skills relevant with regards to the subject area of the appointment.

The applicant must have a doctoral degree in Chemistry, Geochemistry, or an equivalent scientific competence. Documented experience of research on molecular-level studies of geomaterial (minerals, fluids) structure and reactivity, and that are relevant to Geochemistry is a requirement.

Documented experience of teaching at undergraduate and advanced levels is a requirement.

Ability to communicate in Swedish or English is also a requirement.

Assessment criteria and their weight

When evaluating the assessment criteria, scientific and pedagogical skills should together constitute the main grounds for the assessment. Scientific skills should be given the greatest importance, and then pedagogical skills. In addition, consideration should be given to administrative skills, the ability to develop and manage business and staff at the university, as well as the ability to collaborate with the surrounding community and to provide information on research and development work.

Scientific competence shall relate to the area of Inorganic Geochemistry. The degree of scientific competence shall be assessed on the basis of scientific work published in internationally-distributed scientific journals that apply the peer review process, and the ability to obtain external research funding. Criteria for assessment are breadth, depth, originality and productivity in research, as well as the ability to interact with society. 

Preferred candidates are those who represent a strategic fit and will collaborate with the existing members of the Molecular Geochemistry group of Umeå University, and who can initiate research with the currently available capabilities at Umeå University Documented skills in bridging molecular simulation and experimental work is a strong merit, as well as a documented ability to receive research grants. 

Pedagogical competence shall relate to the subject area Chemistry. Criteria for the assessment are the ability to plan, implement and evaluate teaching efforts, the ability to vary teaching and examination forms in relation to expected learning outcomes, experiences of collaboration with the surrounding society, participation in the development of teaching materials, and a reflective approach to student learning and their own teaching role. Completed courses in higher education training are a strong merit. 

The applicant must be able to teach in Swedish and English. After three years, the employee must be able to teach in Swedish. 

Administrative skills and the ability to develop and lead activities and staff at the university shall relate to the ability to organize education at the undergraduate level, and documented ability for independent work as well as work in teaching teams.
