Umeå universitet, Teknisk-naturvetenskaplig fakultet

The Department of Mathematics and Mathematical Statistics conducts research in computational mathematics, discrete mathematics, mathematical modelling and analysis, and mathematical statistics. Our teaching is conducted at all levels and includes mathematics, mathematical statistics and computational science. Among our partners are international research groups, academic institutions, public organizations and companies.

The Department of Mathematics and Mathematical Statistics invites applications for a tenure-track position as Assistant Professor in computational mathematics. Last application date is 2020-02-21. Welcome with your application!

Background

The Department of Mathematics and Mathematical Statistics conducts strong research in several areas of computational mathematics, including geometric numerical integration, cut finite elements, and applied spectral theory. In cooperation with the Departments of Computing Science and Physics, we also run a joint interdisciplinary research environment in computational science, UMIT Research Lab, with a rich variety of activities, seminars and opportunities for academic and industrial collaborations. With this recruitment, we wish to strengthen our research in computational mathematics. For the right candidates we offer good opportunities to build up his or her own research agenda.

The employment

The person we are seeking will conduct research in computational mathematics, broadly interpreted, and contribute to the continued development of the research environment in the field. Other tasks include teaching in mathematics. Undergraduate programs at the department, with academically strong students, offer the opportunity to supervise graduate theses in collaboration with external partners.  Additionally, supervision of PhD students and postdocs, primarily in computational mathematics, may be a possibility. The person employed is expected to actively seek external funding for his or her research activities.

Employment is limited to 5 years and consists of 4 years own research and 1 year teaching. The position is a “tenure-track” that makes it possible to develop and establish a long-term research. An  Assistant Professor has the right, upon request, to be considered for promotion to Associate Professor.

Qualifications

The applicant should have a doctoral degree in mathematics or equivalent scientific competence. Priority be given to applicants who have obtained a PhD degree or have achieved equivalent qualifications in the last five years before the application deadline.

The position also requires a good knowledge of English, both spoken and written.

Assessment criteria and their weight

The basis for the evaluation is the degree of skill that is a requirement for employment. When selecting applicants for the position, the degree of scientific skill must be decisive. In addition, the degree of educational skill and administrative skill as well as other skills of importance for the position and duties will be considered. Moreover, the degree of skill for development and leading activities and personnel at the university as well as the ability to cooperate and interact with the surrounding society and inform about research and development work will be considered.

Scientific skill will refer to the area of mathematics. The degree of scientific skills will primarily be assessed on the basis of peer-reviewed publications in internationally renowned journals and conference proceeding that apply a so-called peer-review system. Particular emphasis will be placed on the quality of the publications in which the applicant was the principal author as well as on the proposed research plan. Furthermore, the ability to independently organize, and manage projects will be considered. A demonstrated ability to independently and flexibly to operate, communicate and collaborate inside and outside the academic environment is advantageous. International research experience is very advantageous.

If the person appointed does not speak Swedish, he or she is expected to learn Swedish within three years from the start of the appointment.

Applicants should be active researchers in computational mathematics, broadly interpreted, and also intend to conduct research in this area. A demonstrated ability to obtain competitive research funding, especially from large and reputable research funders, is an advantage.

Educational expertise should relate to the subject area of mathematics. The degree of proficiency should be assessed on the basis of the ability to plan, implement and evaluate teaching as well as the ability to supervise and examine students at every level of education. Additional criteria for assessing educational expertise are the ability to vary teaching methods and formats in relation to anticipated study results and the nature of the subject, experiences of collaboration with the surrounding society in planning and implementation of education, participation in the development of learning environments, teaching aids and study resources, and a reflective approach to student learning and one’s own role as a teacher.

The degree of administrative and other skills of interest should be evaluated by the ability to lead and develop activities and staff at the university, the ability to establish cooperation between research and education at all levels, within the subject area and with other disciplines.

Application

The application should preferably be written in English.

The application should include:

  • cover letter including contact details
  • a resume that includes academic and professional qualifications
  • publication list
  • account of scientific activity (see instructions in the link below)
  • presentation of educational activities (see instructions in the link below)
  • account of the development and management of activities and staff
  • account of the interaction with the surrounding community and popular-science activities
  • a research plan (maximum 6 pages) describing the research that you wish to carry out as part of the employment
  • certified copies of relevant degree diplomas
  • copies of at most five research publications relevant to the position, numbered according to the publication list.
  • a list of two reference persons, including contact details
